There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

How to post a picture

Examples:

1. En los días muy calientes es bueno averiguar que sus vecinos ancianos están bien.

On very hot days it's good to check that your elderly neighbors are well.

2. Mi abuelo puede que sea un hombre anciano, pero sigue teniendo mucho estilo.

My grandfather may be an old man, but he still has a lot of style.

En nuestra época los ancianos también se empeñan en progresar, y a menudo lo hacen con éxito.

In our times the elderly also are keen to progress, and they often do so with success.

La biblia nos dice que los primeros patriarcas eran ancianos. Matusalén vivió novecientos sesenta y nueve años.

The bible tells us that the early patriarchs were old men. Methuselah lived to be nine hundred and sixty nine years old.

Sinceramente, me asusta la idea de pasar mis últimos días en un asilo de ancianos.

Frankly, it frightens me the idea of passing my last days in an old people's home.

Sí, es una idea aterradora. Una sugerencia: "the idea of .... frightens me" o "I'm scared of the idea of...", de lo contrario tienes dos sujetos. :) - Manity, Mar 11, 2015

Un proverbio Africano dice "Lo que un anciano puede ver cuando sentado, un joven no puede ver aun si está de pie".

An African proverb says "What an old man can see when sitting, a young man will not see, even if he is standing."

Hi Osas! "What an old man can see": If you are not using nouns you have to use an article "Lo que un anciano...". The second part is pretty good (y) - georgeir, Mar 10, 2015

Taking care of the elderly in many places used to be the responsibility of the family but now it is the government's job.

The oldest person that I have known was one hundred and eight years old, but she did not have full use of her faculties, but I used to know someone who was one hundred and six who laughed at me one time because I wrote the wrong date on something, and she knew the correct date and I was less than half her age. The oldest person I know now is only one hundred and five- I have known her for more than fifteen years.

A veces me siento anciana, luego el próximo día me siento joven. En el pasado, pocos personas sobrevivieron a mi edad, ahora la mayoría va a vivir a un edad grande.

Sometimes I feel ancient, then the next day I feel young. In the past, few people survived to my age, now the majority are going to live to a great age.

Sigo el programa 'Better Call Saul' (Debe Llamar a Saul) que trata del cuento de un abogado américano que se muere de ganas de ganar más negocios. Esta noche voy a ver el próximo episodio. En el último decidió ser 'abogado para los ancianos'. Creo que no sabe nada sobre la ley por lo que respecta a las personas mayores. Va a ser un lío verdadero para él. Pobre Saul.

I'm following the program 'Better Call Saul, which tells the story of an American attorney who is desperate to win more business. This evening I'll watch the next episode. In the last one he decided to become an 'elder lawyer'. I don't think he knows anything about the law as it relates to elderly individuals. It'll be a right mess for him. Poor Saul.

Honestly I was trying to think of a sentence where I could put the word honor in it but couldn't think of one

En México el "Día del abuelo" se celebra el 28 de agosto, gracias al locutor Chihuahuense Edgar Gaytan a principios de los años noventas
