There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Es normal sentirte frustrado cuando estás aprendiendo un idioma nuevo pero, ¡no te des por vencido!

It's normal to feel frustrated when you're learning a new language, but don't give up!

2. Eduardo nunca aprendió a montar en bicicleta.

Eduardo never learned to ride a bike.

Deberíamos aprender a respetar uno al otro, independientemente de nuestras diferencias.

We should learn to respect each other, irrespective of our differences.

Yes, TipaGal: aprender + a + infinitive: aprender a respetar, aprender a leer, aprender a tocar guitarra... - LuisCache, Mar 6, 2015

Cuanto más aprendemos del mundo, lo más nos damos cuenta de cuánto de verdad ignoramos.

The more we learn about the world, the more we realize how much we truly don't know.

Aprendamos tanto más *Aprendemos mucho más** cuando los ojos y las orejas sean abiertos y la boca cerrada.

O mejor dicho: Aprendemos mucho más cuando nuestros ojos y oídos están abiertos y nuestra boca cerrada. Muchísimas gracias a nuestro nuevo amigo mexicano y hispanohablante, muchísimo bienvenido al foro y al sitio en mi opinión.

We learn so much more* when our eyes and ears are open and our mouth closed.

*Of course indicative, where is my brain? and thank you Luis!

Hi, Jubilado. Nice avatar! It doesn't sound natural to me "tanto más". I would say: "Aprendemos (indicative) mucho más cuando..." - LuisCache, Mar 6, 2015
Jubildo, I always thought you were American? Are you really from Down Under? - annierats, Mar 6, 2015
I am American and live there, but I heard that koalas have a grumpy disposition and I was feeling grumpy. Sorry TipaGal, but it's going to change. I'm not grumpy any more. - Jubilado, Mar 6, 2015
The translation sounds better like this: "Aprendemos mucho más cuando nuestros ojos y oídos están abiertos y nuestra boca cerrada." (Sorry if I'm not polite when I write, but I don't know how to say friendly stuff) - georgeir, Mar 6, 2015
It's true about koalas, they might look cute but they are not cuddly. A diet of 100% eucalyptus leaves would make anyone grumpy. - jennysk, Mar 6, 2015

Aunque nuestro primero instinto cuando nuestros hijos se meten en lío es salvarlos y resolverles la situación, es importante que ellos aprendan que sus acciones tienen consecuencias; por eso debemos decidir inteligentemente cuándo deberíamos ayudarlos y cuándo deberíamos dejarlos que traten con sus propios problemas.

Although our first instinct when our children get themselves in a tight spot is to save them and solve the problem for them, it is important that they learn that their actions have consequences; therefore we must decide intelligently when we should help them and when we should leave them to deal with their own problems.

¡Es hora de aprender------hebreo!

It's time to learn ----------Hebrew!

Había una vez una viejecita que estudiaba hebreo. Un día una nieta le pregunta: "Abuelita ¿por qué estudias hebreo? Contestó la vieja: "Pues, es cierto que no voy a pasar mucho más tiempo aquí, y cuando llegue a la Gloria, quiero hablarle a Dios en su lengua materna.

Once upon a time there was a little old lady who studied Hebrew. One day a granddaughter asks her, "Grandma, why are you studying Hebrew? The old lady replied, "Well, it's for sure I'm not going to spend much more time here, and when I get to Glory, I want to speak to God in his mother tongue.

That is the start of the prayers for "grace" at the table." Blessed art Thou O Lord our God, King of the world" (sometimes "olam" includes the whole universe.) - Daniela2041, Mar 6, 2015
How about this one: "Shemá Ysrael, Adonai Elohenu Adonai Ehad" Ihave that on a bracelet that Iwear.--only in Hebrew letters. - Daniela2041, Mar 6, 2015
Ekhad---the "kh" sounding like Spanish "J" - Daniela2041, Mar 6, 2015
Dani, It seems to start almost all prayers. it's nice to know and is used extensively in the Haggadah - no, everyone, I'm not Jewish but i respect my ancestors. - Jubilado, Mar 6, 2015
If this keeps up, we'll have a "Hebrew Dict" :) At our church we use the Messianic Haggadah at Passover which is coming up soon. - Daniela2041, Mar 6, 2015

Creo que nuestras vidas y nuestras sociedades serían muy diferentes si no aprendiéramos a leer. La habilidad a leer es fundamental en la vida moderna. Todo el mundo ahora puede encontrar información sobre todo. Sin embargo, todavia se necesita inteligencia para utilizar la información sabiamente.

Si, como yo, quisieras ser viñero, hay que aprender muchas cosas sobre la producción del vino porque las cosas han cambiado y el público ya no quiere beber el vino malo.

If, like me, you would like to be a wine producer, there is a lot to be learnt about wine production, because things have changed and the general public no longer wants to drink bad wine.

Inmy youth there was a German wine called Liebfraumilch, a very superior Australian wine called Jacob's Creek, and a Hungarian wine called Bull's Blood. That was about it. - annierats, Mar 6, 2015
We buy Jacob's Creek from time to time. A Riesling would have to be very dry before we would drink it. I have never heard of Bull's Blood, I do not think we get much Hungarian wine here. - bosquederoble, Mar 6, 2015
Hi! This is a little context mistake, for this one you better use "las cosas han cambiado". - georgeir, Mar 6, 2015
