correr ( koh-rrehr' )

verb ( to run )

We are still looking for a Spanish corrector that would like to correct on a full time basis. If you are interested, please send me a pm.

Also, I would like to thank all those that have so graciously donated their time in helping us with the Spanish corrections. Cordobesa, Dani, Julian, Luis, tiempo_de_es, Jimmy, Gex-Thunderstrom, leumas11, txustaboy, LuisCache, FELIZ77, Jubilado, billygoat, annierats, Neox, Kiwi, Josuele, diagonx and anyone else that has helped. Hopefully, I haven't left anyone out.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

I don't understand how people can run outside during the winter. It's so cold!

Last year I ran in a Tough Mudder race and I almost died, it was so hard. .

The gazelle knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed.

Since "gacela" is a female noun it can't be "asesinado" but "asesinada". Nice pic, would love to see one of those hunts in real life. - diagonx, Mar 3, 2015

If you deem bullfights as your culture, you may well just perish and vanish along with them.

Instead of condemning a culture (or a person) to death and disappearance, isn't it better to educate? Spain is "getting" it! --and this "espectáculo" is being gradually banished from our culture. Should a whole nation perish because of one stupidity? - Daniela2041, Mar 3, 2015

The thief came running out of the bank desperately clutching a bag with a great deal of cash in it. He ran so fast that notes worth thousands of euros got caught by the wind, just like dead leaves.

When news spread that the United State was the most obese country in the world, I decided to eat a lot of junk food so that my country could stay in first place. I realize that I run the risk that I could have health problems as a result.

I'm going to give a little help here. "Al correr la nocitia"--"comer muchA comida basura" "para que mi país se quede" (subjunctive) "corro el riesgo de tener problemAS de salud" - Daniela2041, Mar 3, 2015
@ Daniela2041 Thanks so much for correctons, Dani. I need to review when to use subjunctive. - Sassette, Mar 3, 2015

Actually, I believe that the US is not the most obese (sorry, all of you who want to be firsta nd best!). There are a number of Pacific Islamds ahead of the US - jennysk, Mar 4, 2015
@ jennysk I'd be interested in the specifics. Data does differ from study to study but the general results could not be clearer for 2014: US is way up the list, usually in the #1 spot. - Sassette, Mar 4, 2015

This past weekend, I was wondering how much risk I was running, because after discovering that the water main to the house had started to leak rapidly due to damage from tree roots, I closed the main valve, and opened it only once in a while for a short time, and the absence of pressure allowed water to leak back in to the tube from the soil, and the water was not clear.

Oh dear..I hope you get that fixed. - rac1, Mar 3, 2015
An expensive disaster. They tunneled through my yard yesterday, we are awaiting the city inspector today so they can recement the holes in my garage floor, and fill in the holes by the street end. Supposedly the new pipe he laid is more resilient. :( - bosquederoble, Mar 3, 2015
It will be over soon, at least. - rac1, Mar 3, 2015
:) - 00ffada9, Mar 3, 2015
We had to replce all of the pipes inside our house last year. Expensive :-(((!!!!! - Jraider, Mar 3, 2015
I am glad this was outside mostly, he just broke through a 2x2 foot area in the garage near the house shut off valve, found the pipe there, dug a hole in the garden by the water meter near the curb, and used some machine to tunnel the two ends together. - bosquederoble, Mar 3, 2015
Under the garage and driveway of course, and part of the garden. Fairly minimal damage. Nothing was wrong on the house side, this was in the pipe off the water meter right before it hit the shut off valve for the house. - bosquederoble, Mar 3, 2015
I just had this done before Christmas. I didn't have insurance for it so it was a bite. - Jubilado, Mar 3, 2015
The insurance we have does not cover anything but subsequent damage, so it does not cover most of it. - bosquederoble, Mar 3, 2015

Many years ago I tried running for exercise, but it hurt my back. It's better for me to walk fast, it's good exercise and doesn't cause so much stress on the body.
