There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Después de la muerte de Alejandro Magno, su imperio fue dividido entre sus generales y consejeros.

After the death of Alexander the Great, his empire was divided among his generals and advisors.

2. No tiene sentido temer la muerte. Tarde o temprano nos visitará a todos.

There is no sense fearing death. Sooner or later it will visit us all.

Sé que la muerte es tan natural como la vida, pero no por eso tientes al destino ni votes por ella para que nos represente.

I know that death is just as natural as life is, but that doesn't entail pushing your luck voting for death to represent us.

@diagonx what senador are you referring to? - Sassette, Feb 27, 2015

looked into why "cada..." means once in a blue moon. Best I could come up with is there are not many bishops around and they have long lifespans so their deaths are every once in a while. Nice post. - Sassette, Feb 27, 2015
Oh Ann, you deserve to be the winner today, the most surprising contribution and i've learned a new expression, many thanks. - annierats, Feb 27, 2015
Great one, AnnRon. Can you explain the bishop thing? Thanks!! - Winkfish, Feb 27, 2015

Mexicans and the Death

Mexicans have a special relationship with death. There are several books about this. We like to say that "we aren’t afraid of death". But I think that's just bull. Anyway, maybe death is more visible in our culture than in others. Maybe it is due to our indigenous and Spanish legacy.

In the indigenous Cosmo vision of Mesoamerica death was nothing else but the end of a cycle and the beginning of a new one. And death didn't have the moral sense that had in the Spanish culture.

This reminds me of a bilingual (in Spanish and English) children's book I took out from the library about the Day of the Dead. That helped me learn that Hispanic culture (certainly including neighboring Mexico) are quite open about the subject of death. - Sassette, Feb 27, 2015

Todos moriremos algún día, pero esperamos que nuestros hijos sigan viviendo a lo largo de nuestras vidas, y tratar con la muerte de un hijo, de cualquier edad, es muy difícil para la mayoría. No puedo imaginar cómo reaccionaría mi esposa ante la muerte de uno de nuestros hijos y ojalá que yo nunca lo sepa.

All of us will die some day, but we expect that our children will continue living throughout our lives, and dealing with the death of a child, of any age, is very difficult for most people. I cannot imagine how my wife would react to the death of one of our children and I hope to never know that.

Se dice que el cuadro de Goya „Hasta la Muerte” que demuestra una anciana quien se maquilla delante de un espejo , habría querido burlarse de la reina de España.

It is said that the picture by Goya „ Until the death” that shows an elderly woman who is doing her makeup in front of a mirror , would have liked to mock the queen of Spain.

Es bueno que la muerte nos separe sólo por un rato, pero ese rato parece una eternidad.

It is good that death separates us only for a while, but that "while" seems like an eternity.
