Ya, todavía and aún (yet,already,still,not yet...)

Question

This is the last post in my website. Below you will find an exercise to practice. I will give you the answer in a few days. Hope you like it! This is the link to see a chart about this:

1. You can use the adverbs “todavía” y “aún” (yet, still) before or after the verb.

We haven´t paid yet. Todavía/aún no hemos pagado. No hemos pagado todavía/aún.

*Watch out! Even can also be translated as “todavía/aún” when it´s placed before or after a comparison (más, menos, peor, menor…)

Even faster. Todavía/aún más rápido. Más rápido todavía/aún. She is even more beautiful than her daughter. Ella es todavía/aún más guapa que su hija. Ella es más guapa que su hija todavía/aún.

1. The adverb “ya” has different uses but one of the most common meanings is “already”. In a negative way, “ya no” means “not…anymore” or “no longer”. The adverb “ya” is usually placed before the verb, especially in the negative way (“ya no”).

We have already paid. Ya hemos pagado.

I no longer have a house. Ya no tengo una casa. I do not like this house anymore. Ya no me gusta esta casa.

Let´s see some examples:

YET

He hasn´t finished yet (frase negativa) No ha terminado todavía/aún Have you finished yet? (interrog. positiva) ¿Ya has terminado?
Haven´t you finished yet? (interrog. negat.) ¿No has terminado todavía/aún?

ALREADY

I have already finished (frase afirmativa) Ya he terminado. Have you already finished? (interrog. positiva) ¿Ya has terminado? (indicando sorpresa)

STILL

He is still here (frase afirmativa) Él todavía/aún está aquí. He still hasn’t paid the bill (frase negat.) Todavía/aún no ha pagado la cuenta.

NOT YET

Have you finished? No, not yet. ¿Has terminado? No, todavía/aún no.

NOT…ANYMORE

I do not love you anymore. Ya no te quiero.

NO LONGER

Mike no longer goes to the gym. Mike ya no va al gimnasio.

Exercise: complete with "ya", "ya no", "todavía/aún no", "todavía/aún"

a. ¿______________ has comprado la bicicleta? b. Sí ______________ la he comprado pero ______________ tengo que pagarla.

c. ¿______________ no has limpiado la cocina? d. No, ______________ .

e. ¿_____ quieres casarte con Pedro? f. No, ____ estoy enamorada de él.

In e and f you have another option:
