decir ( deh-seer' )

verb ( to say; to tell )

We are still looking for a Spanish corrector that would like to correct on a full time basis. If you are interested, please send me a pm.

Also, I would like to thank all those that have so graciously donated their time in helping us with the Spanish corrections. Cordobesa, Dani, Julian, Luis, tiempo_de_es, Jimmy, Gex-Thunderstrom, leumas11, txustaboy, LuisCache, FELIZ77, Jubilado, billygoat, annierats, Neox, Josuele, diagonx and anyone else that has helped. Hopefully, I haven't left anyone out.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Helen Keller dijo una vez que "la vida o es una aventura temeraria o no es nada."

Helen Keller once said that "life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all."

2. Yo siempre les digo "Buenos días" a todos mis colegas.

I always say "Good morning" to all of my coworkers.

Necesito decirte algo.
¡Dímelo todo!
Él me dijo que te ama.
¡¿No me digas?!
¡Sí. pero no te lo vuelvo a decir!
Por qué no me dijiste dijo esto antes?
Ya he dicho demasiado ya.

I need to tell you something.
Tell me everything.
He told me she loves you.
You don't say!
Yes, but I'm not going to say it again!
Why did you not tell me this before?
I have said too much already.

Decir

What about, dice, dicen, decirle and dígame? Just playing lol - rac1, Feb 22, 2015
@Diagonx I have heard 'No me digas' but was trying to use the tú form which the conjugation chart said was 'di', does 'no me digas' trump this because it is a common figure of speech? - jrschenk, Feb 22, 2015
Negative, in the subjunctive, jschenk. I can see you've been in my class too! - annierats, Feb 22, 2015
¡ Ah! El subjuntivo. Entiendo. Gracias a los dos. - jrschenk, Feb 22, 2015
I was (incorrectly) trying to make it imperative. ;) - jrschenk, Feb 22, 2015
It is imperative, but the negative imperative uses the subjunctive form. Well, I think so. - jennysk, Feb 23, 2015
in the sentence ¡Sí. pero te lo vuelvo a decir! shouldn't it be "pero no te..."? - Sassette, Feb 23, 2015
@TipaGal Sí, sí, muchas gracias! - jrschenk, Feb 23, 2015
@jrschenk No problem, amigo. - Sassette, Feb 23, 2015
I think you should change "...no me dijo..." in line 6 to "... no me dijiste..." stay with familiar throughout. And I would say "Ya he dicho demasiado." - Jubilado, Feb 23, 2015
@ Jubilado Entiendo y estoy de acuerdo. Muchísimas gracias por ayudarme. - jrschenk, Feb 23, 2015

La profesora nos ha dicho muchas veces que tenemos que grabar los verbos españoles de memoria.

Our teacher has told us many times that we must learn the Spanish verbs by heart.

¿Qué me dices de Taco Bell? ¿Quieres ir a comer allá?

And what about Taco Bell? Want to eat there?

Por supeusto, Taco Bell es comida méxicana. Por supesto

(Por supesto Taco Bell sirve comida méxicana)
(Obviously Taco Bell serves Mexican food)

I ate there once...never again. - rac1, Feb 22, 2015
In hackerking's defense (his profile lacks detail) he may be from a part of the world where a Taco Bell franchise is his only exposure to Mexican food... sadly. - jrschenk, Feb 22, 2015

¿Te digo un secreto? / Shall I tell you a secret?

Lo de que estoy de vacaciones es un decir, porque vengo a la oficina casi todos los días.

To say I’m on holiday isn’t strictly true because I come in to the office nearly every day.

¡Buena noticia! El gobierno de Estados Unidos diga dice que ya no tenemos que preocuparnos sobre el la cantidad de colesterol que existe en nuestro nuestra alimentación. Bueno, la noticia no está es del toda tan buena. Las comidas que contienen altas cantidades de grasas saturadas todavían siguen están siendo consideradas no estar sanas insalubres (or como no saludables) .

Good news! The United States government says that we no longer have to be concerned about the amount of cholesterol that exists in our diet. Well, the news is not all that good. Foods that contain high amounts of saturated fats are still considered not to be healthy.

Graphic says, if I'm accurate, the following: Healthy for the heart? Not at all!

great...all the foods I love to eat :-( Why did God work it out where the best tasting, most satisfying foods kill people? - Sassette, Feb 23, 2015
He really didn't. Your taste buds will change if you begin to eat healthy. You will wonder why you ever wanted that junk food. - rac1, Feb 23, 2015
Sorry, i meant high glycemic index foods that will kill you. I agree with Rac, when my wife asked me this morning what I wanted for dinner, I said a salad. And that is what I got- she did a brussel sprout salad with sliced grilled chicken breast on top. - bosquederoble, Feb 23, 2015
I'll consider what you both are saying, Amber and bosquederobl. It would help me if I ate better. Just looked at list of GI foods. No surprises. Some foods high in GI are healthy, but probably in limited quantities (e.g., watermelon) No scones! - Sassette, Feb 23, 2015

Yesterday, my daughter's boyfriend asked her to marry him, and she said yes- while my wife and I were at a beer festival- and because I do not have a cell phone nor facebook , I was thinking that I would not be able to congratulate her until my wife reminded me that this daughter is the only one of the children that has accepted my Instant Message account from my iPad. I sent her a message of congratulations in Spanish, and she responded in Spanish that, even though it was not correct, was understandable.

He proposed to her on horseback- if you are wondering what the background is (this is the actual ring):

En los caminos pasa a menudo que los automovilistas dicen groserías, pero es importante que no lo hagan cuando los niños están presentes.

On the roads it often happens that motorists say vulgarities, but it is important that they don't do it when children are at present.

.."it often happens"..... "important that they don't do it when children are present."

El año pasado, nuestra profesora de español nos dijo que no debemos decir "es posible", sino "se puede" en su lugar. Pero en SpanishDict a menudo leo esta expresión , "es posible" , usado por hispanohablantes. ¡Por favor, decidme lo que creéis! (O sin vosotros, diganme lo que creen).

Last year, our Spanish teacher told us that we should not say "es posible" , but "se puede" instead. But in SpanishDict often I read this expression , "es posible", used by Spanish speakers. Please, tell me what you think!
