adjective ( unknown )

We are still looking for a Spanish corrector that would like to correct on a full time basis. If you are interested, please send me a pm.

Cordobesa, Dani, Julian, Luis, tiempo_de_es, Jimmy, Gex-Thunderstrom, leumas11, txustaboy, LuisCache, FELIZ77, Jubilado, billygoat, annierats, Neox, Josuele and anyone else that has helped. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. El representante dimitió su puesto en el Congreso por razones desconocidas.

The representative resigned his seat in Congress for unknown reasons.

2. El informante le dijo al periodista que tenían que reunirse en un lugar desconocido.

The whistleblower told the journalist that they had to meet in an unknown place.

Hola, amiga. In regards to first sentence, I don't know if it's better than "puesto" but I've seen "escaño" in my Spanish readings when talking about seats in legislature. - Sassette, Feb 20, 2015

Nuestro buen amigo bosquederoble se enfrenta a lo desconocido. Ha sido secuestrado por criaturas alienígenas de los la serie de televisión The Simpsons. Los alienígenas dijeron que lo llevarán a sus planeta para ser procesado. Espero que bosequederoble pueda tomar su portátil con él para que podamos descubrir lo que "procesamiento" implica (o descubrir que implica el proceso) . Que Dios te mantenga seguro, bosequederoble.

Our good friend bosquederoble faces the unknown. He has been taken captive by alien creatures from the t.v. series The Simpsons. The aliens said that they will take him to their planeta planet to be processed. I hope that bosquederoble can take his laptop with him so that we can find out what processing involves. May God keep you safe, bosequederoble.

Creo que la forma en que tratas a los extraños desconocidos es un presagio de que clase de persona que se será.

I believe that how you treat unknown strangers is a harbinger of what kind of person one will be.

nice post. Don't know if "unknown" is needed because what strangers do you know? - Sassette, Feb 20, 2015
well, I guess with that said, Annie has the same term in her post too so perhaps that is a way to put "strangers" - Sassette, Feb 20, 2015
Forastero and extraño are not the same, Tipa, jschenks stranger is´´odd´´. Which is clever use, jschenk. - annierats, Feb 20, 2015
Lol Jr. In English it's just "strangers"... but I know you know that. - rac1, Feb 20, 2015
Esto me gusta muchísmo. Personalmente incluiría los animales tambíen porque la gente que es cruel con ellos no suele ser buena gente. - Manity, Feb 20, 2015
This is perhaps the most important quality that a human being can possess. Great post :-)! - Jraider, Feb 20, 2015
Creo que la forma en LA que trataS...de persona serà uno... - Pablo064, Feb 20, 2015
Muy cierto, jrschenk! - LuisCache, Feb 20, 2015
I meant to imply one who is both unknown to us and outside of our comfortable socoal group (a stranger). It's an easier thing to approach someone who fits in your social group... a familiar stranger - jrschenk, Feb 20, 2015
@tiempo_de_es When I wrote "I believe that how you treat..." the implication was meant to be "I believe that how one treats..." in that context, should I still add the S to trata? Thanks in advance. - jrschenk, Feb 20, 2015
de acuerdo! - languagenut, Feb 20, 2015
Gracias por la palabra "presagio" y estoy de acuerdo tambien... - BailaBailaBaila, Feb 20, 2015

Ya que he visitado el planeta de los extraterrestres, y que ya no son desconocidos, me encantan los extraterrestres, y quiero ayudarlos a proseguir su meta de resolver todos nuestros problemas políticos por medio de la conversión de nuestro planeta en una granja gigante y pacífica para alimentarlos.

Now that I have visited the aliens’ planet, and they no longer are strangers, I am enchanted by the aliens, and I want to help them carry out their goal of resolving all of our political problems through the conversion of our planet into a gigantic and peaceful farm in order to feed them.

Annie, and I was worried someone wouldn't get the implication. Ian- I had though to put religious as well, but then, yes, decided it would be redundant. ;) - bosquederoble, Feb 20, 2015

yeah, it's probably diverse. I've heard that even within Mexico there are some differences in how Spanish is spoken. They don't use vosotros in addressing people from what I understand. - Sassette, Feb 20, 2015
You are absolutely correct. There are places that I visited where I had to have an iterpreter to put into proper Spanish what the locals were saying. Boy, they changed everything--especially substituting "j" for "s" It was weird! - Daniela2041, Feb 20, 2015

La mayoria de asesinatos no son cometidos por forasteros desconocidos sino por nuestros parientes consanguíneos o nuestros esposos.

The majority of murders are not committed by unknown strangers but rather by our blood relations or our spouses.

Unos momentos más tarde esta ama de casa se convirtió en asesina... Se trató de una camisa de desmasiadas.

Just a few moments later this house-wife became a murderess. A case of one shirt too many.

@ annierats You're funny. In thinking about it, marriage is way too beautiful to say no to because of fears like this. I'd like to think that there would be clues during dating if a guy has the potential to be violent. - Sassette, Feb 20, 2015
