oscuro ( oh-skoo'-roh )

adjective ( dark; obscure, incomprehensible )

We are still looking for a Spanish corrector that would like to correct on a full time basis. If you are interested, please send me a pm.

Also, I would like to thank all those that have so graciously donated their time in helping us with the Spanish corrections. Cordobesa, Dani, Julian, Luis, tiempo_de_es, Jimmy, Gex-Thunderstrom, leumas11, txustaboy, LuisCache, FELIZ77, Jubilado, billygoat, annierats, Neox, Josuele and anyone else that has helped. Hopefully, I haven't left anyone out.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

How to post a picture

Examples:

1. Las calles del vecindario de mis padres son completamente oscuras; no hay luz alguna.

The streets of my parents' neighborhood are completely dark; there is no light whatsoever.

2. Mi profesor de filosofía a cada rato está haciendo las referencias más oscuras. No entiendo nada de lo que dice.

My philosophy professor is always making the most obscure references. I don't understand a thing he says.

Se detuvo en seco. El alumbrado público terminaba al final de la calle. Delante de él había un largo callejón angosto, oscuro como boca de lobo.

He almost stopped in his tracks. Where the street ended the street lights ended too. Ahead of him lay a long, pitch-dark stretch alley.

a fantastic post!!!! I learned "oscuro como boca de lobo" means pitch dark. Wish I could give you more than 1 vote. - Sassette, Feb 17, 2015
I wonder if English translation should have something about stopping suddenly (en seco) - Sassette, Feb 17, 2015
Love the expression "oscuro como boca de lobo". - earlyspanishspeaker, Feb 17, 2015
I like that expression too: 'oscuro como boca de lobo'! I don´t know how to translate the expression: He almost stopped in his tracks. - LuisCache, Feb 18, 2015
¡Muy bien, Luis! - Jubilado, Feb 18, 2015
Very good, Luis. :) - rac1, Feb 18, 2015
I kind of goofed. in his tracks does mean suddenly so the translation is correct. Now, to be picky maybe you could have thrown in "casi" or something to indicate "almost" - Sassette, Feb 18, 2015
Thank you, TipaGal! - LuisCache, Feb 18, 2015

En muchos de los cuentos clásicos para niños, se representan los bosques como lugares muy oscuros y muy peligrosos, y la verdad es que para los niños lo pueden ser, pero los bosques también son muy importantes para la salud del planeta, y cuando eran éramos niños mis hermanas y yo solían solíamos pasar mucho tiempo explorando bosques sin encontrar demasiado peligro y todavía nos encantan los bosques.

In many of the classic tales for children, forests are depicted as places very dark and very dangerous, and the truth is that for children they can be that, but the truth is that forests are also very important for the health of the forest planet, and when we were young my sisters and I used to spend a lot of time exploring forests without encountering too much danger and still are enchanted by forests.

Thanks, Manity, I screwed that up. :) - bosquederoble, Feb 17, 2015
Yes, so did we, Bosque, and very few children actually come to harm in forests. Roads are another matter. - annierats, Feb 17, 2015
"forests are also very important for the health of the forest" Did you mean to say that? - rac1, Feb 17, 2015
Well at least I got what I meant to say in spanish (I wrote the Spanish first). No, thanks rac. :) - bosquederoble, Feb 17, 2015
Thanks .It really helps when corrections are shown with the mistakes that were made. I try to do the same with my posts although sometimes I wimp out and don't return to see how many votes I got. - Sassette, Feb 17, 2015
Yes, I agree, I think it is nice to be able to see what not to do, and not just have the mistakes erased. That is why I update it that way. Although sometimes it can get messy. :) - bosquederoble, Feb 17, 2015
para los niños lo son... - Pablo064, Feb 17, 2015
para 'los' niños lo pueden ser..my correction is just the article :p - Pablo064, Feb 17, 2015
Great effort. Pleased to see I am not the only one who makes mistakes. It is a very complex sentence. Well done. - languagenut, Feb 17, 2015
Thanks. I still haven't completely figured out articles, that one was a real knowledge error, not a dumb mistake. :) - bosquederoble, Feb 17, 2015
Most definitely not a dumb mistake. It is a well thought out sentence. - languagenut, Feb 17, 2015
Ah, but the corrections Manity made (and Rac- I am a native English speaker even thought it may no always seem so apparent) were dumb mistakes. I know how to conjugate to alguien y yo, when I don't, I am being dumb. ;) - bosquederoble, Feb 17, 2015
Great post! - LuisCache, Feb 18, 2015
Thanks, Luis. :) - bosquederoble, Feb 18, 2015
I was just pointing out a correction. I wasn't saying you were dumb. :) - rac1, Feb 18, 2015
I wasn't saying you were. I was saying that I make dumb mistakes at times. At other times my mistakes reflect a lack of knowledge that I can learn from. I prefer the later. ;) - bosquederoble, Feb 18, 2015
I make plenty of those dumb mistakes. :) - rac1, Feb 18, 2015

Me gusta la historia de El Zorro, aunque tiene un lado oscuro, su proeza en última instancia se utiliza para el bien de la gente.

I like the story of Zorro, although he has a dark side, his prowess is ultimately used for the good of the people.

Me gustaría dar cabida, pero la obra de Isabel Allende es el único libro que poseo que fue escrito en español, y los primeros relatos no eran libros, pero historias recurrentes que fueron publicados en una revista. Respondiendo en español es difícil. - jrschenk, Feb 17, 2015

En Suecia se dice que en la oscuradad todos los gatos son pardos (grises). Es un dicho algo oscuro pero creo que no refiere a los gatos sino a las mujeres.

In Sweden there it is said that in the dark all cats are grey. It is a rather obscure saying, and I think it doesn't refer so much to cats as to women.

Se dice de la Edad Media que era oscura . Es verdad , pero a partir de esta época los siglos llamados ilustrados tampoco traían mucha paz a la humanidad.

It is said of the Middle Ages that it was dark. It is true, but from this time the so called enlightened centuries were not bringing a lot of peace to humanity either.

En la película (obra de teatro) "Un hombre para la eternidad" (España) "El hombre de dos reinas" (Hispanoamérica) Thomas More pregunta para clarificarse, "¿Creo que me hago muy bien oscuro?"

In the film (play) "A Man for All Seasons" Thomas More asks to clarify himself, "I trust I make myself quite obscure?"
