I know that sin embargo means however and pero means but. However, I can't understand the difference between them.

Do you understand the difference between but and however in English? It's about the same. - Manity, Feb 17, 2015

What's the difference between 'but' and 'however' in English ? I suspect the difference between 'pero' and 'sin embargo' in Spanish might be similar. For me, generally I use 'but' to connect two phrases within the same sentence in English, whereas I use 'however' at the start, often for emphasis.

This might help - from my learn English CD.

One can use various conjunctions to say almost the same thing.

El coche es muy Viejo, sin embargo lo compro.

The car is very old nevetheless I (will) buy it.

La comida estaba bien, pero los cuartos estaban sucios.

The food was good, but the rooms were dirty.
