ganar ( gah-nahr' )

verb ( to win; to earn )

We are still looking for a Spanish corrector that would like to correct on a full time basis. If you are interested, please send me a pm.

Also, I would like to thank all those that have so graciously donated their time in helping us with the Spanish corrections. Cordobesa, Dani, Julian, Luis, tiempo_de_es, Jimmy, Gex-Thunderstrom, leumas11, txustaboy, LuisCache, FELIZ77, Jubilado, billygoat, annierats, Neox, Josuele and anyone else that has helped. Hopefully, I haven't left anyone out.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Después de más de cien años, los Cachorros de Chicago ganaron la Serie Mundial.

After more than a hundred years, the Chicago Cubs won the World Series.

2. A Elizabeth le gusta su trabajo, pero no gana mucho dinero al año.

Elizabeth likes her job, but she doesn't earn a lot of money every year.

Me alegró que el Oeste ganara el partido de baloncesto anoche, pero la verdad es que el "All-Star Game" siempre es un poco tonto porque los jugadores no toman en serio la defensa como la tomarían si fuera un partido que les importara.

I was glad that the West won the basketball game last night, but the truth is that the "All-Star Game" is always a little silly because the players don't take defense seriously like they would if it were a game that was important to them.

very well done. You're right but it's a lot more entertaining than the NFL Pro Bowl. - Sassette, Feb 16, 2015

mmm I'd say 'es que los All Star Game siempre son un poco tontos...' cause they are a team - Pablo064, Feb 17, 2015
Hay dos equipos, el Oeste y el Este, que juegan en el "all star game"= partido de los mejores jugadores o algo así. El partido es un poco tonto. :) - bosquederoble, Feb 17, 2015
aaah jajaj I didn't know that - Pablo064, Feb 17, 2015
Wikipedia no cree que "all star game" debería ser traducido por alguna razón u otra. http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-Star_Game_de_la_NBA - bosquederoble, Feb 17, 2015
I got it now jajj seeing the name 'all-star game' yep it was very obvious - Pablo064, Feb 17, 2015

No me importaba ganar su respeto ni amor, solo quería asegurar que me legara todo en su testamento.

I did not care about winning his respect, nor his love. I just wanted to make sure he left me everything in his will.

Is 'querria' conditional tense? Why not use 'queria', preterito imperfecto? - jennysk, Feb 16, 2015
No 'quería' ganar (querría- I'd want) and it'd be 'no me importaba ganar su...' que me 'dejara' todo :) - Pablo064, Feb 17, 2015
Hi Tiempo! Thanks for the corrections. I have a question though. I found the word ''legar'' in the dictionary here. Seems it means 'willing' someone something. Did I get this wrong then? Thanks again(: - nanai, Feb 17, 2015
yes nanai it's right, however you'd use 'legar' if you are an attorney or a notary that's why I thought it was some typo :) - Pablo064, Feb 17, 2015

I'm guessing the second sentence can use some adjustments. One thing I think is "antes DE que" - Sassette, Feb 16, 2015
perhaps "La semana antes de que perdieron" - Sassette, Feb 16, 2015
pero, hace dos semanas, ( I think this might be the simplest way of saying the week before that, la semana anterior de la semana pasada, might work, but sounds impossibly clumsy) Suggestion only, as ever. - annierats, Feb 16, 2015

¿Qué ganarás cuando pierdes? Experiencia y el conocimiento que la vida es no sólo de ganar, pero también sobre aprender a perder.

What do you gain when you lose? Experience and the knowledge that life is not only about winning, but also about learning to lose.
