luz ( loos )

noun ( light )

We are still looking for a Spanish corrector that would like to correct on a full time basis. If you are interested, please send me a pm.

Also, I would like to thank all those that have so graciously donated their time in helping us with the Spanish corrections. Cordobesa, Dani, Julian, Luis, tiempo_de_es, Jimmy, Gex-Thunderstrom, leumas11, txustaboy, LuisCache, FELIZ77, Jubilado, billygoat, annierats, Neox and anyone else that has helped. Hopefully, I haven't left anyone out.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

How to post a picture

Examples:

1. La luz viaja 186.000 millas por segundo.

Light travels 186,000 miles per second.

2. No puedo dormir si están prendidas las luces.

I can't sleep if the lights are on.

Génesis

Entonces Dios dijo: "Hágase la luz". Y la luz se hizo. Dios vio que la luz era buena, y separó la luz de las tinieblas; y llamó Día a la luz y Noche a las tinieblas. Así hubo una tarde y una mañana: este fue el primer día.

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, and it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light 'day,' and the darkness He called 'night'. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

Una luz si por la tierra, y dos luces si por el mar;

Y yo estaré en el opuesto orilla. (del poema El Viaje de Paul Revere por Henry Wadsworth Longfellow)

Good job! but I think "I will be" is "estaré" no? - Jubilado, Feb 12, 2015
You did a great job...I wouldn't have been able to do that much. :) - rac1, Feb 12, 2015
Thanks Jubilado! I don't know why I had it that way (temporary influency?). ha I didn't try to write the Spanish sentence exactly like the English, since I don't know if that would work in Spanish. :) - Findy, Feb 13, 2015

Antes de que hubiera una buena fuente de luz, todo el mundo solía acostarse muy temprano. Ahora hay luz de electricidad en todos partes, y la gente puede leer, jugar, estudiar y quedarse hasta tarde. Este mapa muestra donde están las luces en la noche.

Before there was a good source of light, everyone used to go to bed very early. Now there is electric light everywhere and people can read, play, study and stay up late. This map shows where the lights are at night.

Contrario a la intuición, pero cierto: como promedio durante un año entero, Alaska recibe 10-17 minutos de la luz por día más que el resto del país.

Counterintuitive, but true: averaged over an entire year, Alaska gets 10-17 minutes more daylight per day than the rest of the country.

En Suecia hay mucha gente que sufre depresiones inviernales en las que la combinación de falta de luz natural y las bajas temperaturas afecta a nuestro ánimo al grado que algunos se suicidan. Se llama trastorno afectivo estacional. (TAE)

In Sweden there are many people who suffer from winter-depressions, when the lack of natural light and the low temperatures combine to affect our mood, to the extent that some even commit suicide. This is called Seasonal Affective Disorder ( SAD -syndrome).

Hay una cita famosa que dice “todos sabemos que la luz viaja más rápido que el sonido- es por eso que algunas personas lucen brillantes hasta que las escuchamos hablar” pero es obvio que esto es falso. A pesar de esto, esta diferencia en velocidades es la razón que vemos el relámpago antes de que oigamos el trueno.

There is a famous quote that says “we all know that light travels faster than sound- that's why certain people appear bright until you hear them speak” but it is obvious that this is false. Despite this, this difference in velocities is the reason that we see lightning before we hear thunder.

Desde que el monigote de presidente que nos tocó del '90 a '94 lanzó su dizque apertura económica, que no fue más que la burda rifa neoliberal de los recursos del país, y que los españoles llegaran de nuevo, a apoderarse y explotar la electrificadora local, no quedamos sin luz a cada rato sin que nadie responda por ello jamás.

After the tool of a president we had to endure in the '90-'94 preiod launched his so-called opening up to market, which was acutally the gross neoliberal raffling of the country's resources, and that the Spanish came again, to take over and exploit the local electricity company, we've constant blackouts without anyone ever being accountable for it.
