Nouns like policía

The Spanish word "policía" changes it's a meaning somewhat depending on gender:
La policía = the police force (or the institution)
el policía = a police officer (male)
For a female officer, does one refer to her as "la policía" or is there another way to express it more clearly?
Juan llamó a la policía y una policía llegó unos minutos más tarde. La policía que llegó se llamaba Inspectora López.
Is the above acceptable? Correct? Is there a better way to say it.

You could always say la mujer policía if you wanted to specifically say policewoman.
