cambio ( kahm'-byoh )

noun ( change )

We are still looking for a Spanish corrector that would like to correct on a full time basis. If you are interested, please send me a pm.

Also, I would like to thank all those that have so graciously donated their time in helping us with the Spanish corrections. Cordobesa, Dani, Julian, Luis, tiempo_de_es, Jimmy, Gex-Thunderstrom, leumas11, txustaboy, LuisCache, FELIZ77, Jubilado, billygoat, annierats, Neox and anyone else that has helped. Hopefully, I haven't left anyone out.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Por más que no te guste, la vida está llena de cambios.

As much as you may not like it, life is filled with changes.

2. Siempre dejo que el taxista se quede con el cambio.

I always let the taxi driver keep the change.

Desde la prehistoria hay una resistencia al cambio y me parece que el pensamiento de la gente no cambia nunca.

Since prehistoric times there is a resistance to change and it seems to me that the thinking of the people never changes.

Este no es un mundo en el que te creerían cuando dices "No pido nada a cambio", resultó ser una mentira demasiadas veces. Pero sería hermoso si las cosas fueran distintas.

This isn't a world where people would believe you when you say "I don't ask for anything in return", it turned out to be a lie too many times. But it would be so nice if things were different.

Cambiaron el programa informático en mi trabajo durante el fin de semana, y hasta ahora la mayor parte de los cambios parecen cosméticos que sólo sirven para confundirnos, y los cambios que he notado en cómo el programa funciona hacen que sea mucho más difícil cumplir esas tareas.

They changed the computer program at my work over the weekend, and so far most of the changes seem cosmetic that only serve to confuse us, and the changes that I have noted in how the program works make it so that it is much more difficult to accomplish those tasks.

Cada vez que encuentro un producto que me gusta mucho, se van y mejorarla ellos van y lo "mejoran"; no todos los cambios son buenos.

Whenever I find a product I like a lot, they go and improve it; not all changes are good.

Wolfie dice que, ni siquiera si pudiera cambiar de color no lo haría porque no le gusta los cambios tan espectaculares.

Wolfie says that even if he could change colour , he wouldn't , because he doesn't like such dramatic changes.

Me estoy preparando para un cambio de aires mañana. Espero que la aerolínea no va a decir: ha habido un cambio de planes.

I am preparing for a change of scene tomorrow. I hope the airline will not say: there has been a change of plans.

(Note for TipaGal: The English go for a change of scene; the Spaniards go for a change of air.)

No hagas un cambio deprisa. Piense cuidadosamente antes de actuar. Don't make a change in haste. Think carefully before you act.

Buen consejo. - Jubilado, Feb 9, 2015
De acuerdo. "Hagas" is the 'tú' form and "piense" is the 'usted' form. The subjunctive is not necessary for informal affirmative commands, so either no hagas -> piensa for 'tú' or no haga -> piense for 'usted'. :) - Manity, Feb 10, 2015

Cuando un hombre está teniendo una crisis mediana edad, a menudo él quiere un cambio de trabajo, de coche, de casa y de esposa. A veces, después de hacer estos cambios, puede ser que todavía su vida no sea mejor. Ha hecho mucho caos , pero el cambio que necesitaba era interno, en su mente.

When a man is having a mid-life crisis, often he wants a change of work, car, house and wife. Sometimes, after making these changes it can be that still his life is not better. He has made a lot of chaos, but the change that was necessary was interior, in his mind.
