abrir ( ah'-breer )

verb ( to open )

We are still looking for a Spanish corrector that would like to correct on a full time basis. If you are interested, please send me a pm.

Also, I would like to thank all those that have so graciously donated their time in helping us with the Spanish corrections. Cordobesa, Dani, Julian, Luis, tiempo_de_es, Jimmy, Gex-Thunderstrom, leumas11, txustaboy, LuisCache, FELIZ77, Jubilado, billygoat, annierats, Neox and anyone else that has helped. Hopefully, I haven't left anyone out.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

How to post a picture

Examples:

1. Abre una ventana antes de usar esos productos de limpieza. Los gases son tóxicos.

Open a window before using the cleaning products. The fumes are toxic.

2. Ten cuidado cuando abras la puerta de que no venga ningún ciclista.

Be careful when you open the door that no bicyclist is coming.

.

Enjoy Your Weekend

No me gusta abrir regalos, el papel de envolver siempre me parece un desperdicio de la vida de un árbol, pero a mi esposa, sí, le gusta mucho. El próximo fin de semana nos quedamos en un cabaña en el bosque con otra pareja (lo cual me suena como el comienzo de una película de terror), y por eso supongo que debería envolver sus regalos para el Día de San Valentín.

I don't like to open presents, wrapping paper always seems to me to be a waste of the life of a tree, but my wife likes doing so very much. This next weekend we are staying in a cabin in the woods with another couple (which sounds to me like the start of a horror movie), and so I suppose I should wrap her Saint Valentine's Day presents.

Luckily I don't watch horror movies. My main worry is whether the weather will be nice enough to go out hiking. - bosquederoble, Feb 7, 2015
¡Muy bien escrito y muy interesante, Bosque! :) ¿Te gusta recibir los regalos? - FELIZ77, Feb 7, 2015
La verdad es que por la mayor parte, no me regalan cosas que me importan, pero cuando alguien lo hace, sí, me gusta, pero todavía no necesito recibirlo envuelto. :) - bosquederoble, Feb 7, 2015
Whoops my wife came in and looked over my shoulder and saw the cabin in the woods above. Luckily she doesn't watch horror movies either. - bosquederoble, Feb 7, 2015
you may have gotten by tiempo but not me! I caught a typo: you need to add the "s" to wood :-) - Sassette, Feb 8, 2015

If we open our dictionaries, we will see that the English word "open" can be used as a verb, a noun, or an adjective.

Si abrimos nuestros diccionarios, veremos que la palabra inglés "open" se puede ser utilizada como un verbo, un sustantivo, o un adjetivo.

It looks like I'm not the only one that can get hurt when there aren't many votes. My situations differs because I'm just a beginner at writing Spanish but effort is not rewarded. I think SD should scrap voting. - Sassette, Feb 8, 2015
just to clarify I'm not saying I deserve many votes. But everyone who participates should get at least 5 votes so they get a badge for their efforts. And if moderators or others are frustrated with votes I think it's best to get rid of voting. - Sassette, Feb 8, 2015
Tipa, don't worry, if you happen to be on the wrong side of the world, timewise, you get less votes. If I write a good sentence in my evening, nobody sees it, if I'm in at coffee-time lots of people see it and are kind enough to vote. - annierats, Feb 8, 2015
Yes that explains a lot of it. - ian-hill, Feb 8, 2015

Hace tiempo que no abro una carta, me refiero a una carta escrita de puño y letra de algún amigo o familiar, tenía algo especial, ahora sólo recibo las cartas del banco y la publicidad del supermercado.

It has been a long time since I have opened a letter, I´m talking about a handwritten letter from a friend or a parent, those had something special, now I only receive bank letters and supermarket advertising.

Si uno se abre a cosas y experiencias que le dan miedo, aprende a superar su miedo, y si las evita, uno se hace aún más temeroso y el miedo puede convertirse en una fobia, y afectar su capacidad para tratar con cosas necesarias.

If one opens oneself up to things that give one fear, one learns to overcome one's fear, and if one avoids them, one becomes even more fearful and the fear can be converted into a phobia, and affect one's capacity to deal with necessary things.

That of my wife has intensified, because she nourishes it. - bosquederoble, Feb 7, 2015
She is now unable to do most yard work, and I suppose I have contributed by allowing her to avoid such. Of course I can't say I would be likely to hold a tarantula in my hand either, but if I had to, I think I could. - bosquederoble, Feb 7, 2015

Abrirse Ábrete a una experiencia de invierno. Mires la fotó foto del pino cubierto de nieve que tomé hace unos días en a/por la noche. Los carámbanos están bonitos, ¿no?

Open yourself up to a winter experience. Look at the photo of the snow covered pine tree that I took a few days ago at night. The icicles are pretty, aren't they?

Y aquellos en frente de la taberna gritaron abierta la puerta

tenemos poco tiempo para quedarse , ya nunca más a volver.

(abran la puerta...tenemos poco tiempo para quedarnos, y nunca más volver.)

And those in front of the tavern shouted open the door

we have little time to stay, never again to return.

La señora: << ¡Sí, me molesta mucho jovencito, porque mi peluca podría salir volando por la ventana! >>

The young man: "Excuse me madam, would you mind if I opened the window in this compartmente (or carriage) as it's very hot, today?"
