I need help understanding this

Okay so I was looking up words and I don't remember what the word was but here was the example sentence - El accidente detuvo la circulación de tráfico por completo.The accident stopped the flow of traffic completely.
Now my question is why is the world for completely used as an adjective instead of an adverb in the sentence?

It's easy. "por completo" is an adverbial expression which can be translated as "completely".
