Así at the start of a sentence......

Hi all,

I have been reading these forums for the best part of a year in my quest to learn spanish and firstly i want to thank you all, as every post has helped my learning.

I have searched previous threads and have done the dictionary definitions in identifying what "así" means. I understand it means so but i have come across some sentences recently which i am not sure if it translates to 'so.'

The 'sentences' which i refer to are from my twitter feed, i have added spanish newspapers to help my learning, they're sport based so i do apologise.

  • "Así ha salido James del hospital"
  • "Así suenan los motores de #F1 en 2015"
  • "Así felicitan a @Cristiano desde Portugal"
  • "Así explica Marcelo la jugada de su tarjeta amarilla"

If anyone could help me it would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Creo que en todas estas frases, puedes cambiar "así" por "de esta manera" (in this way).

Gracias cordo, I have heard " así' used as " that way " as in -" Así voy a hablarlo muy bien" = "that way I am going to speak it very well." - ray76, Feb 6, 2015
Sí, Ray, tu frase es un buen ejemplo. :) - Cordobesa, Feb 6, 2015

Although así can mean 'like so' there isn't always a set translation but phrases like ... this is the way, that's the way, that was the way, like this, like that, just like that, thus etc etc may all be feasible options depending on context smile

I agree with the answer given by Cordobesa. I want to bring to your attention the definition found in the "Diccionario de la lengua española" of the Real Academia Española. For a small 3 letter word, they offer 10 meanings.

Have a look at this link ----> Así

Best personal regards/Saludos,

To me, "so" sounds like the right word.

"Así ha salido James del hospital" So James has left the hospital. "Así suenan los motores de #F1 en 2015" So sound the F1 motors in 2015. "Así felicitan a @Cristiano desde Portugal" So congratulations to Cristiano from Portugal!! "Así explica Marcelo la jugada de su tarjeta amarilla" So Marcelo is explaining the play when he got a yellow card.

They do sound like follow ups to another sentence, and without context we can't be sure, but they sound alright to me.

I believed this type of así is "like this or this way" in Spanish de tal manera. This way/like this he has let the hospital.
