extraño ( ex-trah'-nyoh )

adjective ( strange )

We are still looking for a Spanish corrector that would like to correct on a full time basis. If you are interested, please send me a pm.

Also, I would like to thank all those that have so graciously donated their time in helping us with the Spanish corrections. Cordobesa, Dani, Julian, Luis, tiempo_de_es, Jimmy, Gex-Thunderstrom, leumas11, txustaboy, LuisCache, FELIZ77, Jubilado, billygoat, annierats, Neox and anyone else that has helped. Hopefully, I haven't left anyone out.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. La familia que se acaba de mudar al vecindario es muy extraña. Son muy pálidos y nunca salen de día.

The family that just moved to the neighborhood is very strange. They're very pale and never come out during the day.

2. Creo que todo el mundo estaría de acuerdo de con que el ornitorrinco es un animal extraño y fascinante.

I think everyone would agree that the platypus is a strange, fascinating animal.

Los extranjeros son muy raros, viven en tierras extrañas y tienen costumbres y tradiciones distintas de las nuestras. No me gusta ir de vacaciones a otros países, y tener que comer sus comidas poco apetecibles, prefiero quedarme en casa y comer comida casera..

Foreigners are odd. They live in foreign lands and have customs and traditions that are different from our own. I don't like going on foreign holidays and having to eat their unappetizing food, I prefer to stay at home and eat home-cooked meals.

El chico escribió a su novía en una carta: "Te extraño muchísimo, cariño y estoy impaciente por estar contigo de nuevo y por mirar a tu bella cara. ¿Cuándo pueda casarme contigo, María? Muchos besos y abrazos. Juan. La chica contestó íAcabo de conocerte, y tienes once años y tengo solo siete años creo que tendrás que esperar unos pocos años!

The young boy wrote in a letter to his girlfriend; "I really miss you a lot, love, and I can't wait to be with you again and look at your beautiful face! When can I marry you, Maria? Lots of hugs and and kisses, Juan. the girl answered, I have only just met you and you are eleven years old and I am only seven ...I think you will have to wait a little longer!
