This seems a stupid question. I want to write to a friend that I'm packing up in order to move house.

I don't mean I'm packing my suitcase ( hacer la maleta), nor that I'm wrapping things in wrapping paper (empaquetar), I mean I'm sorting things that are to go, filling large boxes with books, carrying furniture about... Packing up, as we say in England. How would this best be said in Spanish? I've looked in several dictionaries.

Anything to get out of packing for while, it's much more fun to look in dictionaries.

Voy a numerarlas. - annierats, Feb 4, 2015
Thank you, a most comprehensive answer, all this is just what I have to do! - annierats, Feb 4, 2015
- Cordobesa, Feb 4, 2015

When you say "Nos mudamos (de casa)" it goes without saying that you will be preparing to that event. including packing and packaging. wink

So, aileia gave you the answer.

¡Hola!, Annierats, from frozen freaking South West Ontario, Canada!! Brrr!!

I surfed Colins Eng <?> Span Dictionary and I thought it was pointing pretty strongly at "recoger" as the single verb for "packing up".

Judge for yourself at this page in Collins ???> Recoger

Best personal regards/Saludo,
Moe

Thanks Moe, I thought it was empacar until I found it also meant to dig your feet in and be mulish! - annierats, Feb 4, 2015

I've no idea if this is idiomatically correct, but I would guess:

Estoy arreglando mis cosas para mudarme...
