conocer ( koh-noh-sehr' ) enter image description here enter image description here

verb ( to know; to meet )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Linda y yo nos conocemos desde que éramos niños.

Linda and I have known each other since we were kids.

2. Anoche conocí a los padres de mi novia por primera vez. ¡Qué nervioso estaba!

I met my girlfriend's parents for the first time last night. I was so nervous!

Antes de ir a Colombia en dos mil once, nunca había oído ni de la aldea Guachetá ni la ciudad de Zipaquirá pero ahora conozco los las dos.

Before going to Colombia in two thousand eleven, I had never heard of the village of Guachetá or the city of Zipaquirá, but now I’m familiar with both of them.

"Quien no te conozca que te compre" es un refrán español. Si quieres saber su significado, haz clic aquí. Y aquí tienes la historia del burro y de la frase.

"Let him who does not know you buy you" is a Spanish saying. If you'd like to know its meaning, click here.
And here you have the story about the donkey and the sentence.

Please, help me with the saying in English... Is there a better way to translate it? Por favor, ayúdame con el refrán en inglés... ¿Hay alguna manera mejor de traducirlo?

A similar saying is "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" but that doesn't mean exactly the same. This saying seems to mean "buyer beware - caveat emptor." - Jubilado, Feb 1, 2015

Después de conocer a salir con mi esposa la próxima primera vez, nunca salgo salí con otra mujer- después de conocerme, mi esposa salió con otro hombre el próximo al día siguiente. La enfada Eso le molesta cuando se lo hago notar, y siempre me dice que la cita ya había sido planeado planeada y que no sabía si yo la llamaría otra vez.

After meeting my wife the first time, I never went out with another woman- after meeting me, my wife went out with another man the next day. It annoys her when I note that, and she always tells me that the date had been planned already, and she did not know whether I would call her again.

Good story, but if your wife reads it she's going to get annoyed! - Jubilado, Feb 1, 2015
Gracias, Gx. :) - bosquederoble, Feb 1, 2015
eso le molesto cuando lo noté? that doesn't make sense let me improve your correction Gx 'después de salir con mi esposa la PRIMERA vez..hombre al día siguiente..eso le molesta cuando se lo hago notar y siempre me dice(subject no needed).planead.. - Pablo064, Feb 1, 2015
..planeadA..y que no sabía si 'yo' la llamaría.. sorry Bosque I don't want you to get confused :) - Pablo064, Feb 1, 2015
Thanks Tiempo, that makes sense to me. Clearly I am still mentally recovering from my trip- how I used próxima instead of primera I do not know, and I couldn't even do the corrections right this morning. :) - bosquederoble, Feb 1, 2015
Just so there is no doubt, the first time I met my wife, it was to take her out on a date, we were set up as a blind date. - bosquederoble, Feb 1, 2015
The only think that I have any question at all remaining is your change from el día siguiente to al día siguiente. - bosquederoble, Feb 1, 2015
el siguiente día is correct but doesn't sound natural to me, al día siguiente or al siguiente día is better, how'd I say it? 'salió con otro hombre al otro día' - Pablo064, Feb 1, 2015
Gracias. :) - bosquederoble, Feb 1, 2015

A los niños siempre se dice, que no hablen con las personas, que no conocen.

Children are always said not to talk with people whom they do not know.

Minimal English correction- change "said" to "told" and remove the comma. More natural change "who" to "that". Children are always told not to talk to people that they do not know. :) - bosquederoble, Feb 1, 2015
Welcome to the thread. :) - rac1, Feb 1, 2015
In formal English grammar it would be .., whom they do not know. But I like bosquerobles suggestion better, and people rarely use "whom" in speaking, at least not in the USA. - Jubilado, Feb 1, 2015
We're also prone to leave out the relative pronoun altogether: Children are always told not to talk with people they don't know. - AnnRon, Feb 2, 2015
In England you can say ' whom'. Correct and sounds as though you're very well educated, which indeed you are, if you say ' whom'. - annierats, Feb 2, 2015
Thank you, to all of you for your corrections. - luuana, Feb 2, 2015
