Where are the Spanish speakers when one needs them?

Where are the Spanish speakers when one needs them?

Unfortunately we have a severe lack of expert Spanish speakers who want to correct our Spanish on the threads for word of the day and picture of the day.

I wonder why.

Gracias leumas11

Me pregunto por qué.

I would like to suggest for those taking the time to correct and help others but not want to participate. Make a blank post so we can vote for you also because we can't vote for comments.

Now you have me feeling guilty. I do a lot of correcting in the comments, but not as an official "corrector" I would be willing to give it a try, but with my schedule I wouldn't be able to spend long periods of time at it. I sort of come and go and put in my two centavos' worth whenever I can. I'll speak to Amber about it and see what happens.

We certainly do not want you or any other native to feel guilty for not doing enough or not feel put upon /pressured to do more, Daniella. However, if you would like to help out as and when you can I am sure this would be very much appreciated - FELIZ77, Feb 5, 2015

To be honest, this is the reason why I don't take part in any games/exercises (eg word/picture of the day, translation exercises etc). Absolutely no disrespect implied here, but without corrections from a native speaker, I can't see any point at all. There is also a big danger that people can pick up on the mistakes of others and just accept them as gospel.

As this is a free forum etc, I am always eternally grateful for any corrections I am given, but I also appreciate that making corrections can be very time consuming and I certainly don't expect it as a right - as I would of course if I was paying for help.

It's a difficult one isn't it.....on the one hand it's great to practise and have a bit of fun with like-minded individuals, but on the other, if corrections are not made then perhaps all that is happening is people are practising and consolidating their mistakes.

I understand where you are coming from mate , but it is like defeatist , we can all still try and do the best that we can - ray76, Feb 5, 2015
I think that I understand where you are coming ffrom and agree with you up to a point Billy, as we do not wnat to reinforce our mistakes, But we can still learn from others here who are not natives because we correct each other here ! - FELIZ77, Feb 5, 2015
Those people who are more advanced Spanish speakers than myself like Kiwi and Jubilado still offer corrections to my posts and other intermediate speakers like Annierats are also welcome to leave comments and suggestions/corrections if they think I am wro - FELIZ77, Feb 5, 2015

Hi Feliz. I do agree with you to some degree, but from what I have seen very few corections are offered on the games here. I have received far more corrections when I have tried to answer individual threads. Don't get me wrong playing games is great - billygoat, Feb 5, 2015
fun but for me personally there needs to be some sort of real learning focus to it. I am here (and other sites) to learn Spanish first and foremost, if I can have a bit of fun doing so then brilliant, I'm up for that!! - billygoat, Feb 5, 2015
I would say that looking up things for some of the game threads causes me to study things I might not otherwise, and the game threads allow me to practice simpler sentences, whereas I tend to try to write something harder whenever I expect a correction. : - bosquederoble, Feb 5, 2015
If I don't have a game to force me do that type of practice, I tend not to do it. So I still find it useful, although obviously it would be even better if everything were corrected. - bosquederoble, Feb 5, 2015
Hi Bosque, that's the great thing about individuals and learning styles.... if it works for you then great, go for it! - billygoat, Feb 5, 2015

Not so long ago we could not have daily threads without official correctors. If that were so now we would have no daily threads.

We have NO ONE.

A tiempo, I believe that the majority of people regularly taking part in the threads, on Spanish Dict, such as Picture of the Day and Word of the Day and other games would greatly appreciate receiving corrections from native Spanish speakers provided that you all continue to make the corrections sensitively (that is to say, in a respectful manner) and sometimes give us encouragement when we have written Spanish sentences well! (ie: with few mistakes)

We know that some (male and female) natives contribute a lot to this community/ give a lot of help to others here, for example: Cordobesa, Daniela, Julian, Leumas, Luis, y Txusta boy y a tiempo _de _ es y Chileno. ...etc...

All of you Spanish-Speaking natives, would you also like us to help you with your English?

Corrijan mi español, por favor smile

We appreciate any corrections you give, leumas. I don't believe Anyone blames the person correcting if "things go wrong". - rac1, Feb 5, 2015
Oh, definitely, Rac. I meant that healers get the blame when things go wrong and as an analogy correctors might feel unappreciated when people challenge the corrections on a "porque sí" principle. - Manity, Feb 5, 2015

¡Muchas gracias!

I have said it before but I will repeat it: I think SD ought to pay a Spanish corrector, because it takes such a lot of time, effort and a lot of patience to to the job regularily, and do it well. I want to thank those experts that still help with corrections , and we're lucky enough to have Txtaboy, Tiempo, Cordobesa , Leumas, Daniela and Julian. Thank you very much indeed!

I think many of us would pay a small fee. It would be different from just paying to take a 'course', this is a private thing where you can improve at your leisure and test your own progress by making sentences as hard or as easy as you like, no pressure. - annierats, Feb 5, 2015
You're welcome @Annie.
:-( - leumas11, Feb 5, 2015
When I first joined Spanishdict I couldn't believe that some of the major contributors (both Spanish and English speakers) weren't being paid. So much time and effort goes into helping and running a forum such as this. I don't expect, but I certainly - billygoat, Feb 6, 2015

Well said, Annie! The only problem I can discern in the future is that if the SpanishDict managers employed and paid a native to do the corrections on the threads, it's likely that they would have to introduce a membership fee (to cover the cost, and as a consequence, it would no longer be free (it would not be free any more) to participate on this forum!

Don't you think it would be a shame (pity) if the majority of people coulddn't continue learning Spanish here because most of the peole couldn't afford to pay the membership fee?!

One of the most important (greatest) advantages of SpanishDict is that you can continue participating in this forum free of charge, and that we can offer to help the Spanish natives with their English...that's fair isn't it?!

It would be very be helpful if the Spanish-speaking natives who participate here could indicate in their profiles whether they would like to receive help with their English or not, because we do not wish to trouble any of you if you are no interested in recieving help with your English.

I totally understand and agree with you, Rac I am just saying that we cannot force people to receive help with either language if they do not wish to receive it but it would beg the question why do they want to be here ..unless they simply want to help? - FELIZ77, Feb 5, 2015

I think your idea of indicating in a willingness for corrections in the profile is a good idea for everyone, so I have updated mine, although my usual attitude is that if you don't want to be corrected you should not post on a learning site. - bosquederoble, Feb 5, 2015
Bosque , Yes I am inclined to agree with you but it may be that some people will join us, or are already here who would object to being corrected, at least, would be offended/upset if not corrected by a native speaker because they think that the rest - FELIZ77, Feb 5, 2015
of us are not sufficiently competent to offer corrections - FELIZ77, Feb 5, 2015
Feliz, I would be prepared to pay a small amount , if I knew the sentences would always be corrected, wouldn't you? Because I can't be the only one who dowsn't want to do a whole course, or who studies in a manner that suits themselves? - annierats, Feb 5, 2015

Hi, everyone from SD community

First of all, I would like to encourage you to not to feel disappointed. I read your contributions to the threads or the game of the day regularly, and I really want to congratulate you for your effort and good willing to learn Spanish.

Of course all of you commit some grammar mistakes, as everyone who is learning a second language does, but more often than not, those are minor mistakes, such as a discordance of genre between a noun and an adjective.

But normally you find the right sentence yourselves, and usually you are right.

I like to be corrected myself when I write in English and I really appreciate your suggestions and corrections. And when I make some corrections I try not to be rude, and I try not to make much corrections because I don’t want to be misunderstood and be taken as arrogant.

Have a nice day!

To all the native speakers who already help out here on Spanish Dict: :

Please read: / Por favor, lean:

We really appreciate all that all of you already do to keep this forum running smoothly ...we non natives could not do it without your help!

We certainly do not want any of you to feel guilty for not doing enough or to feel put upon / pressured to do more against you will!

However, if any of you would like to help out with correcting any of the regular threads such as Picture fo the Day or Word of the Day as and whenever you can spare the time I am sure this would be very much appreciated by everyone here!

Thank you so very much for all that all of you do smile smile smile
