descalzo ( dehs'-kahl'-soh )

adjective ( barefoot )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1. Yo en mi casa siempre ando descalza.

I always walk around barefoot in my home.

2. El otro día vi a un tipo corriendo descalzo por la calle. ¡Qué locura!

The other day I saw a guy running barefoot in the street. How crazy!

Yo preferiría saltar descalza de una escalera de dos metros en un balde de cinco galones lleno de puercoespines que casarme contigo.

I would prefer to jump barefoot off a 6-foot ladder into a five-gallon bucket full of porcupines than marry you.

Tengo delicados pies, por lo no me gustan de caminar descalzo.

I have tender feet, so I don't like to walk barefoot.

En los templos indios no se puede entrar llevando zapatos,, hay que descalzarse antes de entrar y se tienes que caminar descalzo dentro..

In the Indian temples, one can't enter wearing shoes, one has to remove the shoes before entering and one has to walk barefoot inside..

No me gusta caminar afuera descalzo pero en la casa sí. Creo que la palabra descalzo anteriormente quería decir sin calcetines quizá con sandalias, porque existe la palabra “discalced” para describir unas ordenes religiosas. Cuando hace calor aquí prefiero llevar puesto sandalias sin calcetines adentro y afuera. Es muy cómodo hasta que encuentres espinas en el césped.

I don’t like walking barefoot outside but in the house I do. I think that the word “descalzo” used to mean without socks perhaps with sandals, because the word “discalced” exists to describe certain religious orders. When it is hot here I prefer wearing sandals without socks inside and out. It’s very comfortable until you run into stickers in the grass.

En India es la costumbre de quitarse los zapatos y andar descalzo no solo en los templos y dentro de la casa, sino tambíen en algunas tiendas.

In India it is customary to take off your shoes and walk barefoot not only in the temples and at home but also in some shops.

En los tiempos de pobreza, como la Depresión Grande, muchos padres no podrían permitírse el lujo de comprar zapatos, así que los niños tenían que ir descalzos todo el tiempo. Era una vida muy dura, especialmente en el invierno.

In times of poverty, like the Great Depression, many parents could not afford to buy shoes, ànd so the children went barefoot all the time. It was a very hard life, especially in the winter.

Has visto la pelicula 'Barfuss'? Se trata de una niña ligeramente retrasada, a quien le gusta andar descalzo por todos lados, y como se enamora de este Dios del imagen abajo.

Have you seen the movie 'Barfuss'? It's about a slightly disturbed girl who likes to stay barefoot all the time, and how she falls in love with the God of a man seen below. ((:enter image description here

De niño, un verano, pasé dos meses andando descalzo, porque perdí mis zapatos y no querría quería decírselo a mi madre. Hoy en día con frecuencia todavía recojo el correo sin zapatos, incluso si ha nevado.

As a child, I spent two months wandering about barefoot, because I lost my shoes and did not want to tell my mother that. Nowadays frequently I still retrieve the mail without shoes, even if it has snowed.

Cuándo era niña, caminaba descalza todo el verano. Sólo más tarde me enteré de que es posible llegar a ser infestado con nematodos por andar descalzo en el Sur. Gracias a Dios que eso nunca me pasó a mí.

When I was a kid, I went barefoot all summer. Only later did I learn that one can pick up a hookworm infestation going barefoot in the South. Thank goodness that never happened to me.

(Please correct my Spanish.)

it's okay 'andaba descalza todo el día' would be better and 'eso nunca ME pasó' is enough so 'a mi' is redundant - Pablo064, Jan 30, 2015

Nunca voy descalzo. Tengo miedo sería herido. De hecho fui herido cuando era un joven.

I never go barefoot. I am afraid I would get hurt. In fact I was injured when I was a youngster.
