Velocity - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velocity
A boat sailing up wind from point A to point B cannot sail directly to its goal. It must sail off wind at varying angles and then in the opposite angle in a Zig Zag fashion to reach its goal. Obviously there are many angles that can be choosen. Angles that move you closer to your goal may result in different boat speeds. And a boat sailing closer to the wind may have less speed but less distance to cover and may arrive first thus having greater velocity inspite of its slower speed. Or a boat sailing further off the wind may have greater speed and thus cover the additional water faster and arrive first giving it the greater speed and velocity. The calculation of the distance traveled and the speed = velocity.
Just noticed the other word in your heading - "velocity." That is a physics term. Often people use it as another word for "speed" but it's technically different. Speed is how fast something is moving, velocity is a function of speed and direction.
Net change, an accounting term, also applies to things other than the stock market. If you weigh 160 pounds, lose 40 pounds, and then gain 10 pounds, your net change in weight is -30 pounds. You lost a total of 40 pounds, but your net loss is 30.
Net change can be a stock market term that refers to the difference between the closing price (last trading price) of a security on a trading day and its closing price on the next trading day. That's the number u see published in the paper usually as the last figure on the stock price list. In over-the-counter transactions, net change is the difference between the closing bids from one trading day to the next.
