mano ( mah'-noh )

noun ( hand )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

2. Mi abuela nació con seis dedos en la mano izquierda.

My grandmother was born with six fingers on her left hand.

Nuestras manos son herramientos extraordinarios. Las damos por sentado la mayoría del tiempo, hasta que no podemos utilizarlas por alguna razón, y entonces discubrimos como lo importantes que son las manos.

Our hands are extraordinary tools. We take them for granted most of the time, until we can't use them for some reason, and then we discover just how important our hands are.

"...la mayoría... descubrimos lo importantes que son las manos." Someone correct me if I'm wrong about it, I myself still struggle with forming "how something something is" phrases in Spanish. - Manity, Jan 26, 2015

Profesora: Lalito, si no sabías la respuesta ¿por qué levantaste la mano?

Lalito: Maestra, no creí que me elegiría.

Teacher: Eddie, if you didn’t know the answer, why did you raise your hand?

Eddie: Teacher, I didn’t think you’d pick me.

Si quieres ganarte la vida como masajista debes trabajar con buenas manos porque tus clientes van a ponerse en tus manos y si no son buenas manos, los clientes votarán con sus pies y no volverán nunca.

If you want to earn your living as a masseur/masseuse you must work with good/gentle hands, because your clients will have to put their trust in you hands. If you fail to develop good hands your clients will vote with their feet and won't return.

Para mí es una pintura maravillosa cuando la mano de Dios levanta a Adán del polvo y las dos manos están tocando.

For me it is a wonderful painting when the hand of God raises up Adam from the dust and the two hands are touching.

De joven solía comprar y leer muchos libros de segunda mano, y a veces leía cuatro novelas cada día de un fin de semana, pero hoy en día ya no me gusta leer libros de ficción, y normalmente sólo leo cosas que no son ficción, pero de vez en cuando hago una excepción y leo una novela de ficción en español para practicarlo.

When I was young I used to buy and read a lot of second-hand books, and at times I would read four novels each day of a weekend, but nowadays I no longer like reading fiction books, and normally only read things that are non-fiction, but every once in a while I make an exception and read a fiction novel in Spanish for practice.

My library has a nice collection of books in Spanish, including fiction books. I've been thinking about reading some fiction in Spanish. You inspire me. Maybe I should give it a try. Hope your trip has gotten off to a good start. - Sassette, Jan 25, 2015
It's been raining, or I probably would be posting even less. - bosquederoble, Jan 26, 2015
Yes, when I was young I also would read 3-4 books at the same time, one in the bath, one in bed etc. Now I only read one at a time, in Spanish, slowly. - annierats, Jan 26, 2015

It would be good for you to have a show of hands to see who wants to go to Russia.

Sería bueno que tengas una votación a mano alzada.para ver quien querría ir a Rusia.
