You can also use wordreference.com's English-Spanish dictionary. It's not bad for figurative expressions. For "clear the air" it gives "enfriar los ánimos" "poner paños fríos," "despejar la atmósfera," and "calmar los aires." Try it yourself for "tongue in cheek."

There seems to be many ways to say these. Try putting the phrases in linguee.com. They give you quite a few good ways to use both.

When I was learning English and ran up against these weird English phrases I had to think "What do they mean by that? If you can figure that out, then a reasonable Spanish expression will surface.

For example to say something "tongue in cheek" means you are not serious--it's sorta in jest.

Así que, en español se dice: "Pedro lo dijo en broma" "Pedro said it "tongue-in cheek.
