llevar ( yeh-vahr' )

verb ( to take, to carry; to wear )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. No olvides llevar dinero en efectivo para el restaurante; no aceptan tarjeta.

Don't forget to take cash for the restaurant; they don't accept cards.

2. La novia llevaba un lindo vestido de encaje.

The bride wore a pretty lace dress.

La semana entrante tengo que ir a Suecia y espero que mi marido me lleve al aeropuerto en coche, porque no quiero cruzar Londres por metro con cinco cambios de trenes. Es que soy campesina.

Next week I have to go to Sweden and I´m hoping that my husband will take me to the airport in the car, because I don´t want to have to cross London by tube, with 5 changes of underground trains. I´m a countrywoman at heart.

Aquí todavía son las vacaciones de verano. Hoy es un día buenísimo. Esta mañana llevé mi tabla de surf a la playa, pero el mar estaba muy tranquilo, no había olas en absoluto

Here it is still summer holidays. Today is a beautiful day. This morning I took my bodyboard to the beach, but the sea was very calm, there were no waves at all.

Alberto está ocupado gastar su dinero porque está seguro de que no puede llevarlo con él. Yo quería pedir prestado uno mil dólares, pero él se negó. ¡ Imagínate!

Alberto is busy spending his money because he is sure he cannot carry it with him. I wanted to borrow one thousand dollars, but he refused. Go figure!

(Help! How do you say ‘go figure!’)

Sickle cell anemia is a condition in which red blood cells become sticky and look like a C-shaped farm tool called a sickle. The sickle cells also get stuck in blood vessels, blocking blood flow. This disease happens when a child inherits two sickle cell genes, one from each parent. People who have inherited one sickle cell gene and one normal gene have sickle cell trait. This means the person won’t have the disease, but will be a trait “carrier” and can pass it on to his or her children.

And sickle cell trait (not the disease, but having only one gene) helps a person survive malaria. - bosquederoble, Jan 20, 2015
Yes, of course!! Do you know why? :D - luisssito, Jan 20, 2015
To my understanding there are competing theories; the newest may be that sickle hemoglobin induces heme-oxygenase-1 which produces carbon monoxide which protects against cerebral malaria. - bosquederoble, Jan 20, 2015
The older and more generally accepted is that parasitized cells sickle at a high rate, and sickle cells are removed preferentially by phagocytes, leading to a high rate of removal of infected cells. - bosquederoble, Jan 20, 2015
Aha, read this article: http://www.pnas.org/content/106/37/15837.full.pdf - luisssito, Jan 20, 2015
I see you're reading a lot trying to understand this topic. :D - luisssito, Jan 20, 2015
I hope a cure is soon. - rac1, Jan 20, 2015

Lol, Rac, do you really think that? - luisssito, Jan 20, 2015
Common in these parts, thanks to premarital genotype blood tests, partners who both carry the trait now know better. - osas-baby, Jan 20, 2015
No te preocupes Luissito, entendemos que algunas personas llevan la enfermedad en su ADN. - annierats, Jan 20, 2015

Un problema con viajar en la primavera y el otoño es que el clima cambia tanto y cual tipo de ropa que debe llevar no se sabe que uno no sabe que tipo de ropa debe llevar.

A problem with traveling in the spring and fall is that the weather changes so much that one doesn't know what kind of clothing to take.

Aunque mi esposa me dijo quien va a llevarnos al aeropuerto el sábado hace unos pocos días, sabe que ya no recuerdo quién es, y por eso anoche me dijo que no sabe quién va a llevarnos, simplemente para recordarme de todos los detalles que maneja, en los cuales yo no tengo que pensar.

Although my wife told me who is taking us to the airport Saturday several days ago, she knows that I no longer remember who it is, and so last night she told me she does not know who is going to take us, simply in order to remind me of all the details that she handles, which I don’t have to think about.
