frio ( free'-oh )

adjective ( cold (temperature); cold, indifferent, cool )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

How to post a picture

Examples:

1. Tengo que comprar un calentador portátil porque mi oficina siempre está muy fría.

I have to buy a space heater because my office is always too cold.

2. Para ser político se tiene que ser frío y calculador.

To be a politician you have to be cold and calculating.

Cuando tenemos una ola de frió como eso , empiezo considerar que tal vez el calentamiento global no estuviera tan malo.

When we have a wave of cold like that, I begin to consider that perhaps global warming wouldn’t be so bad.

I think global warming is responsible for all this extreme weather. - rac1, Jan 18, 2015

En el invierno se puede hacer frío de la tierra hasta el cielo claro y glacial, y el viento puede te chupar el calor del cuerpo.

Winter can be cold from the ground to the clear icy sky and the wind can suck the warmth from your body.

how do you manipulate the graphic size? Seems that no matter what size I make my own graphics it turns out to be the same size. - Sassette, Jan 18, 2015
I voted for the enjoyment of the game, not for the team choice. - bosquederoble, Jan 18, 2015
Yes, geaux Packers! - rac1, Jan 18, 2015
Voting, but Go Pats! - sanlee, Jan 18, 2015
Disappointing first half, of the twelve people at the party, 2 are packer backers and happy, 8 are sad, the other 2 are at least backing football teams- one even nfl (the chiefs?). The one backing a college team of course is in green and yellow. :( - bosquederoble, Jan 18, 2015
Better second half ( plus overtime) - bosquederoble, Jan 18, 2015
It was a good game....One of the best... - sanlee, Jan 19, 2015
Folks, I need an SD word of the day group hug to get over this gut-wrenching loss! But I will admit this game is what makes football great, in the spirit that bosquederobl has. - Sassette, Jan 19, 2015

Donde vivo, durante esta temporada estación, hace frío en algunos días, y hace más frío en otros, pero lo que es más importante es si llueve o no, porque llueve con frecuencia, y es más agradable hacer la jardinería de invierno, como la poda o el cuidado de las plantas perrenes, durante un día soleado, aunque haga frío.

Where I live, during this season, on some days it is cold, and on others colder, but what is more important is whether it rains or not, because it rains often, and it is nicer to do the winter gardening, like the pruning and the perennial care, on a sunny day, even if it is cold.

The rain makes it seem colder to me. - rac1, Jan 18, 2015
Mmmm....I knew "podar" is "to prune" and I had to look up "poda" to figure it out. I wonder if I'm ever going to be able to read Spanish fluently. - Sassette, Jan 18, 2015
If you mean one of the quarters of the year "season" you should use "estación." Temporada would mean an indefinite period of time or a specific season like "hunting season." - Jubilado, Jan 18, 2015
Yes, you are correct, thanks. :) - bosquederoble, Jan 18, 2015

Cálida es sólo piel profunda, pero frío va todo el camino hasta el hueso.
Warm is only skin deep, but cold goes all the way to the bone.
