dinero ( dee-neh'-roh )

noun ( money )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Hannah had to ask her parents for money to pay rent on the apartment.

2. No tenemos dinero suficiente como para poder ir de vacaciones este año.

We don't have enough money to be able to take a vacation this year.

Diga lo que diga, la vida sería más agradable, más divertida y más feliz si tuvieramos mas dinero en el bolsillo.

Say what you will, but life would be nicer, more fun and happier if only we had more money in our pockets.

It's true. I know money isn't everything, but it sure helps. :) - rac1, Jan 16, 2015
But isn't it getting the money out of your pocket that actually brings it all about? - Jubilado, Jan 16, 2015
hmm .. - Joydeep_Singh, Jan 16, 2015
Jubilado, the problem is that the pocket is empty... - annierats, Jan 16, 2015
Mine too .. - Joydeep_Singh, Jan 16, 2015
and I completely agree with you Annie .. I have a warm heart but no money .. hehe - Joydeep_Singh, Jan 16, 2015
Amen. Totally agree. I don't agree with those who go to an extreme and say money has nothing to do with happiness and other things are more important than money. Money may not be the most important, but it's still important. - Sassette, Jan 17, 2015

There are a lot of things you can buy with money but respect isn't one of them

Hay muchas cosas que uno puede comprar con dinero, pero el respeto no es entre ellas.

English teacher alert! "There are a lot of things not There's.... However "There is" is grammatically correct because "a lot" is singular. Confusing language, what? - Jubilado, Jan 16, 2015

Siempre digo que es mi puesto trabajo ganar el dinero y el de mi esposa gastarlo, pero a veces mi esposa me da un poco de dinero cuando vamos juntos a algún lugar como el cine donde cree que es más apropiado que yo pague.

I always say that it is my job to earn the money, and my wife's to spend it, but sometimes my wife gives me a little money when we go out together to some place like the movies where she thinks it more seemly that I pay.

El dinero no puede comprar la felicidad. Me alegro de que tengo suficiente para hacer lo que quiero. Demasiado dinero podría haber sido desastroso.

Money cannot buy happiness. I am glad I have enough to do what I want. Too much money could have been disastrous.

Cada vez que toco la lotería salgo la tienda con menos dinero que cuando entré. Estoy seguro que un día voy a ganar el bote. Al menos espero que sea.

Everytime I play the lottery I leave the shop with less money than when I entered . I'm sure that one day I'll win the jackpot. At least I hope so.

Si haya hubiera una lista de los diez principales en la historia de la humanidad, dinero estaría allá - quizás el primero de todos.

If there were a top ten list about human history, money would be on it - perhaps at the top.

Si había/habríaor hubiera ..( no need for present subjunctive). According to my light, such as it is.. - annierats, Jan 16, 2015
I would have chosen hubiera as the best match given the conditional in the other clause. I would also agree with Annie in that I do not think haya is possible. :) - bosquederoble, Jan 16, 2015

Escuché esta discusión entre dos personas, el otro día

Bueno, no es que lo que puedo decir, "Espera un minuto mientras salgo fuera y tomo un poco de dinero del árbol de dinero...."

I heard this discussion between two people the other day...

Well, it's not like I can say, "Wait a minute while I go outside and pick a little money from the money tree..."

Es verdad que el dinero no puede comprar felicidad, pero se puede infeliz en más comodidad. Además, tener dinero significa que se puede tener los recursos para pagar a un buen terapeuta.

It is true that money can't buy happiness, but one can be unhappy in more comfort. Also, having money means one can afford to pay a good therapist.
