vivir ( vee-veer' )

verb ( to live )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Casi un millón y medio de personas viven en Guadalajara.

Almost a million and a half people live in Guadalajara.

2. Nuestra hija vive sólo por jugar al fútbol.

Our daughter lives only to play soccer.

Life is not always a bowl of cherries, live it the best that you can.

If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not a person or an object

Tiene razón pero eso no es fácil , porque todo el mundo quiere vivir atando a una familia felíz y con objectos agradables

He is right but that's not easy, because everyone wants to live tied to a happy family and with nice objects.

Me interesaría saber si hay formas de vida viviendo en otros planetas, y si las descubriéramos, cuáles serían las diferencias en la química entre ellas y las formas que viven en la tierra, pero dudo que se sepa la respuesta durante mi vida.

It would interest me to know if there are life forms living on other planets, and if they were to be discovered, what the differences in the chemistry between them and the forms that live on earth would be, but I doubt the answer will be known during my lifetime.

Vivir para Jesucristo significa olvidarse de sí mismo y llevar su propia cruz diariamente.

To live for Christ Jesus means to forget about himself and carry his own cross daily.

I live mostly for my loved ones :-)! - Jraider, Jan 13, 2015
I have friends that are Christian and they do it all: they live their faith, make sacrifices and live life to the fullest. They have many skills and have traveled the world. They didn't forget about themselves on their path and I admire that. - Sassette, Jan 13, 2015

No me siento con la gente de mal vivir, y espero que nunca encontraré a aquellos que viven por encima de sus posibilidades.

I don’t sit with undesirable people, and I hope I will never meet those who live beyond their means.

Me gustaría vivir allí, porque se dice que la vida nocturna es inagotable.

I would like to live there , because they say the nightlife never ends.

I think you mean "inolvidable". "Inagotable" means "inexhaustible" :) But then "inagotable" would give it a more fun meaning than "unforgettable". It would mean that the nightllife goes on forever. Wow! - Daniela2041, Jan 13, 2015
How are you amigo? - rac1, Jan 13, 2015
It's only that the sun never sets, the nightlife is usually rather dull in small towns. I take it to be a photo from Sweden anyway. - annierats, Jan 14, 2015

If you want to say "one of the worst things" use "una de las peores cosas" At lease that seems better to me. Maybe Cordobesa or Clio can come up with something better. - Daniela2041, Jan 13, 2015

No es que la vida es perfecta , sino que la alternativa sea infinitivamente peor.

It's not that life is perfect, but rather that the alternative might be outstandingly worse.

Living in winter. It was winter. It was snowing for days continuously. Everything was white. Houses, trees, cars and floor were covered with snow. The streets were icy and the cars had to go slowly. The kids were happy: they were playing with snow and building snowmen. It was cold, but it did not matter to children. They wore winter clothes.

Sounds OK to me. But I have never heard that word used to mean "scatterbrained", but I checked my Webster's Spanish/ English dictionary, and there it was! - Daniela2041, Jan 13, 2015
Despistado also has the meaning of "misled" or "off track". - Daniela2041, Jan 13, 2015
And you shall. :) - rac1, Jan 13, 2015
That is the verb despistar and its participle despistado :) - Joydeep_Singh, Jan 13, 2015
Thanks for scatterbrain lesson. Sounds like you're on the right track: you have a conscience, you've decided not to commit suicide, and you don't want to waste your life anymore. I think you should run for US Congress. - Sassette, Jan 13, 2015
