In the following translation from English to Spanish:

thanks to him who provided me a shelter where I could recover

gracias al que me ha proporcionado un refugio en el que pudiera recuperarme

can I use

gracias a él quien me ha proporcionado un refugio donde pudiera recuperarme

I know this is a bit like applying English grammer to Spanish, but are they correct ?

Sí, puedes usar "donde" en esa frase.

En algunos sitios dicen "quien", y en otros sitios usan más "que": "gracias a él, que...".
