How would I say the following correctly?

I think either of these could be used, but in the context of your sentence the most natural would be 'conocer'
Eg
En 1967 se fue a Málaga y conoció a mi madre ....... this implies meeting for the first time
En 1967 se fue a Málaga y se encontró con mi madre ....... this implies perhaps running into her

I think both are correct, only a nuance:
- Encontrar: involve that he was looking for her En 1967 el vino a Málaga y encontró a mi madre. (can be a poetic use)
or he met her randomly: En 1967 el vino a Málaga y se encontró a mi madre.
maybe they had an appointment: En 1967 el vino a Málaga y se encontró con mi madre.
- Conocer: entail a more deeper knwoledge of the mother after the match. En 1967 el fue a Málaga y conoció a mi madre. Un año después se casaron...
