pobre ( poh'-breh )

adjective ( poor; unfortunate )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Sparkling wine is the champagne of poor men and real champagne is the ruin of those who know the value of nothing.

Vino espumoso es el champán de los pobres y el champán verdadero es la ruina de los que saben el valor de nada. .

I give you a vote whilst pointing out that all bubbling wine in Spain is called ' champán' be it Cava or from the French region so famous for it's production. And the Italian prosecco is now the UK's leading bubbly, I beleive. - annierats, Jan 2, 2015

Pobre es aquel que se rinde y no tiene una buena motivación propia.

Poor is that kind of person which gives up and does not have inner motivation.

Yo sé que el dinero no da la felicidad, pero prefiero ser rico y miserable que pobre y miserable.

I know that money doesn't bring happiness, but I'd rather be rich and miserable than poor and miserable.

Aunque hay excepciones, hay una mejora mayor probabilidad que los hijos de pobres pasarán a ser serán pobres, y que los de ricos, ricos- y algunas de las teorías sobre esto, incluso la de “la cultura de pobreza”, son muy polémicas, pero creo que no hay duda que el acceso a una buena educación es muy importante para romper este “ciclo de pobreza”, aunque no sea todo lo que es puede que no todo eso sea lo necesario.

Even though there are exceptions, there is a higher probability that the children of poor people will become poor, and those of rich ones, rich- and some of the theories regarding this, including that of “the culture of poverty”, are very controversial, but I think there is no doubt that access to a good education is very important in breaking this “cycle of poverty”, even if it may not be all that is necessary.

I agree. I know people that are dirt poor, and single moms and sending their sons or daughters to college. It's got to be very, very hard, but some parents won't have it any other way. I think that is amazing. - rac1, Jan 2, 2015
'hay una mayor probabilidad' or 'hay una probabilidad mas alta'.. los hijos de pobres 'serán' pobres (in Spanish 'become' is redundant)..'aunque puede que no todo eso sea lo necesario' - Pablo064, Jan 3, 2015
Gracias, otra vez, por las correcciones. :) - bosquederoble, Jan 3, 2015

Soy muy pobre pero no me importa porque tengo un corazon riquísimo y por eso chicas por favor alejen se de mi como no les puedo permitirme una sortija de diamante .. y sé que a nadie apetece mi corazón.. que triste :(

I am poor but I don't care as I have one of the richest hearts so girls please stay away from me as I can't afford to give you a diamond ring .. and I know that none wants my true heart //// how sad :(

Por eso solo quiero mi Leo porque a él no le gusta mi plata sino mi corazon y amor ... te quiero mucho Leo smile

And thus I only love my Leo because he doesn't fancy my wealth but my heart and love ... I love you Leo, forever smile

Creo que una sociedad buena es una en que todos los habitantes tienen acceso igual a educación y atención de la salud. Esto significa que los hijos de los pobres no están condenados a la pobreza de sus padres.

I think that a good society is one in which all the citizens have equal access to education and health care. This means that the children of the poor are not condemned to the poverty of their parents.
