hondo ( ohn'-doh )

adjective ( deep )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Esta receta requiere una olla honda para que el agua no se derrame cuando empiece a hervir.

This recipe requires a deep pot so that the water doesn't spill when it begins to boil.

2. El cañón de Cotahuasi en Perú es uno de los más hondos del mundo, con una profundidad de más de tres mil trescientos metros.

Cotahuasi canyon in Peru is one of the deepest in the world, with a depth of more than 3,300 meters.

Dani, can we also say .. voz profunda ?? - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 27, 2014
Yes, absolutely. Also "baja"---but the word of the day is "hondo", sooooo-------. - Daniela2041, Dec 27, 2014
I know dear (about the word of day), I was just seeking clarification :) - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 27, 2014
But "voz baja" would it not mean "a low voice" as opposed to "a deep voice" - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 27, 2014
Me da igual. - Daniela2041, Dec 27, 2014
Ok.. - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 27, 2014
so far in my Spanish studies I have only seen "voz baja" where it clearly meant "low voice." I'll keep in mind that it could mean "deep voice" too if "low voice" makes no sense. - Sassette, Dec 28, 2014

Al encontrarlo, sabe sabía que era un hueco muy hondo, pero mientras miraba por las sombras al fondo, se dio cuenta de que nunca sabría la profundidad de hecho cuan tan profundo era realmente sin descender y explorarlo.

Upon finding it, she knew that it was a very deep hole, but as she was looking through the shadows in the depths, she realized that she would never know how deep it really was without descending and exploring it.

Yep, you have to go down there to really find out. - rac1, Dec 27, 2014
I'm focused on "de hecho" I think it's correct. Perhaps a better translation would be "actually" rather than "really" It's not that big of a deal since it pretty much means the same thing. Nice picture! - Sassette, Dec 27, 2014
Or I could have gone completely literal and went with "in fact". But I sometimes I just go with what I would really have said in English, rather than a literal translation. :) - bosquederoble, Dec 27, 2014
What is the difference between "hueco" and "agujero" ??? - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 27, 2014
"she knew", so in Spanish that is . . . - Vorterix, Dec 27, 2014
Thanks, Vorterix. Dumb mistake. :) - bosquederoble, Dec 27, 2014
Jimmy- to me agujero goes through something-the hole goes from one side all the way to the other, hueco does not totally pierce something- I am sure in truth it is more complex than that. - bosquederoble, Dec 27, 2014
hmm ... if I make a hole in the wall by hammering in a peg or a nail ,, will that be an agujero or a hueco ?? so confusing .. - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 27, 2014
as per your explanation it should be a hueco .. right ?? because it doesn't go all the way through the wall .. - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 27, 2014
'de hecho' no suena natural para nada, no te compliques '...cuan/que tan profundo era realmente sin...' - Pablo064, Dec 27, 2014
Gracias, Tiempo. Es algo de que puedo aprender. :) - bosquederoble, Dec 27, 2014
