encerrado ( ehn-seh-rrah'-doh ) enter image description here

adjective ( to be locked up, to be shut in )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

How to post a picture

Examples:

1. Ayer cayó un palo de agua así que pasamos el día encerrados en casa.

It was raining cats and dogs yesterday, so we spent the day shut in at home.

2. El perro está encerrado en su jaula. No tienes por qué temer.

The dog is locked up in his crate. You don't have to be afraid.

Nos han encerrado en la disyuntiva de pagar más o irnos.

We are trapped in the situation of having to pay more or having to leave.

Quizás es el tiempo del año cuando necesitemos recordar a los encerrados quienes por estar solos, enfermos o por edad no pueden salir de casa para disfrutar la compañía de los demás.

Perhaps this is the time of year when we need to remember the shut-ins who because they are alone, sick or because of age cannot leave their houses to enjoy the company of others.

Mantener algún animal o pajaro encerrado es un pecado..

To keep some bird or animal captivated is a sin..

Sea un buen humano y no haz tal crueldad a los animales pobres..

Be a good human and don't do such cruelty on poor animals..

To keep a bird or any animal in captivity.. ( I agree with you, but the sentence is a little odd) - annierats, Dec 21, 2014
'Captivated' has a different meaning, more like 'fascinated' or 'enchanted'. - jennysk, Dec 22, 2014
That is a wrong usage of " captivated *,mate . - ray76, Dec 22, 2014
You need to use "captive" in your sentence, Jimmy. - rac1, Dec 22, 2014
I think the word "Mantener" is better translated into English as "keeping". "To keep" works to, it's just that "keeping" sounds more natural to me in this sentence. - Sassette, Dec 22, 2014
You are correct Ambi. Annie and Jenny .. thanks amigos .. - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 22, 2014
But someonoe kindly check my Spanish sentence .. Donde esta Danziella ... no la he visto desde hace unos dias ... Danziella, Tx o algun otro amigo o amiga, por favor comproba mi frase .. gracias - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 22, 2014

I despise the middle seat on an airplane because I feel closed in and nobody shares the armrests.

check out the article in Spanish about a new plastic support that can be put on the arm support that will end the competition for the armrest (and your arm won't be touching a strangers arm) http://cnnespanol.cnn.com/?s=molestias+avion - Sassette, Dec 22, 2014

Hay un dicho antiguo que dice así:

"Aquí hay gato encerrado"

Which when translated word for word means: "There's a cat locked up here" (no big deal)

But to a Spanish speaker it has the meaning of"

There's something fishy going on here or how about: "There's something rotten in Denmark"

Una expresión muy chévere, ¿No?

Decades ago in the U.S. people with mental illness were shut away in institutions; today the institutions are closed and they roam the streets instead.

Hace décadas en los Estados Unidos las personas con enfermedad mental estaban encerradas en las instituciones; hoy las instituciones están cerradas y que deambulan por las calles en lugar.

A veces cuando hay una tormenta me gusta quedarme encerrado en casa, pero normalmente podría salir si tuviera que hacerlo, y sólo estoy encerrado de verdad cuando cae una lluvia engelante.

Sometimes when there is a storm, it pleases me to stay holed up inside, but normally I could leave if I had to do so, and I am only truly locked in when freezing rain falls.

Mi marido es un hombre introvertido, que no se relaciona mucho con otras personas porque él tiende a encerrarse en sí mismo. Al contrario, soy una persona extrovertida, me comunico con otros con facilidad. A pesar de la diferencia, llavamos muy bien y tenemos un matrimonio feliz.

My husband is an introvert, he does not relate a lot with other people because he tends to button up himself. Contrary, I am an extrovert , I communicate with others with ease. Despite the difference, we get along very well and have a happy marriage.

La mayoria de la gente odian a ser encerrado. Asi que el castigo por los crimenes serios es estar encarcelado.

Most people hate to be enclosed. Therefore the punishment for serious crimes is to be imprisoned.

Carta abierta a un miembro y amigo, el debate está cerrado.

Me cautiva su estilo, pero también me divierte.

Su lengua está encerrado en una cápsula del tiempo.

An open letter to a member and friend , discussion is closed.

I'm captivated by your style, but it also amuses me.

Your language is locked in a time-warp.

Asian influence

There are a number of elements that characterise the more ‘extreme’ forms of South Asian English. In terms of pronunciation, many speakers do not differentiate between the sounds and . They might also replace in words like think and this with a and sound, as no Indian languages contain these consonants. Under the influence of traditional Hindi grammar, speakers often use progressive tenses in statements, such as I am believing you or she is liking music.

Pero, yo lo amo así .Bueno, tal vez sólo un poco.
