vuelo ( vweh'-loh )

noun ( flight )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Cuando voy de viaje siempre me pongo nerviosa. No tengo miedo a volar, es que no me gustan los aeropuertos grandes con sus muchas puertas, sus colas y sus controles de seguridad interminables . Siempre me pasa algo raro como darme cuenta de que tengo un pequeño cuchillo plegable en el bolsillo , o mis botas de montaña activan la alarma. Es un alivio cuando el avion despega para el vuelo.

When I'm traveling I always get nervous. It' not that I'm afraid of flying, it is that I don't like the big airports with their many gate, their queues and their endless security checks. Something odd always happens to me, such as discovering that I have a small pen-knife in my pocket , or my sturdy walking-boots activate the alarm system. It's a relief when the plane takes off for the flight.

¡Algunos pájaros tienen vuelos que son menos agotadores que otros!

Some birds have flights that are less demanding than others!

When I first read the spanish sentence I interpreted agotadores as exausting, but some quick research on my part confirms that demanding is an excellent translation esp. since it means tiring. Good job! - Sassette, Dec 20, 2014
Gracias a todos! Annie is the difference Ray used a verb and I used a noun? - bandit51jd, Dec 20, 2014

Es un día melancolía cuando las grullas se reúnen en el cielo para comenzar su vuelo largo a su hábitat de invierno.

It is a melancholy day when the sandhill cranes gather in the sky to begin their long flight to their winter habitat.

I tried to find "sandhill crane" in Spanish and of course I couldn't. If you really wanted to be specific (picky, picky, picky) you could put in parentheses: grus canadensis. - Jubilado, Dec 19, 2014

Los pterosaurios, los cuales no eran dinosaurios sino formaban una familia distinta, eran las animales voladores más grandes que nunca han existido, y sería maravilloso si pudiéramos ver uno en vuelo, especialmente porque los científicos todavía no entienden precisamente cómo eran capaces de volar.

Pterosaurs, which were not dinosaurs but instead formed a distinct family, were the largest flying animals that have ever existed, and it would be wonderful if we were to be able to see one in flight, especially because scientists still do not understand precisely how they were able to fly.

As would of course any other necessary corrections (I am just saying positive feedback there would also be welcome). :) - bosquederoble, Dec 19, 2014
Maybe they didn't fly at all. Maybe they just had wings. - rac1, Dec 19, 2014
No han existido nunca sounds ok to me. For what it i worth, but ' volando' might be better.. - annierats, Dec 19, 2014
Thanks, Annie, I normally would have used volando, except that I was trying to include the word of the day in what I wrote- maybe if I said "en pleno vuelo"? - bosquederoble, Dec 19, 2014
I would not want to see one. I think he would eat me! - Jraider, Dec 19, 2014
Good illustration! I never realized the enormity so well before. I think "en vuelo" is just fine for "in flight." - Jubilado, Dec 19, 2014

Thanks Annie , I shall await the verdict - ray76, Dec 19, 2014
Both are correct, Annie .. but if we use "poder" then the noun "el vuelo" would have to be changed to the verb volar... - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 19, 2014
"either "que tiene vuelo" or "que puede volar" - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 19, 2014

the interpretation is good. I wonder if it would be a bit better to interpret this as picking him up instead of meeting him. Might seem a little picky on my part but I always thought of the word "buscar" as looking for or picking up. - Sassette, Dec 20, 2014

As there are cheap flights, people can travel easily and the world became as small as a handkerchief.

Aunque la gente me dirán que los vuelos son peligrosos, nunca me impediré que viaje por aviones por que es más útil y rápido.

Although the people will say to me that flights are dangerous, I will never stop myself from travelling by planes because it is faster and more convenient.
