What did we say?, a short translation excercise.

I actually had to go to work today for a short time, when I arrived home this is what occurred:

Me acerqué al tazón de totopos que estaban en la cocina y probé la salsa que estaba enseguida.

Después de un momento dije:

¡Caramba! esta salsa está discretamente picante!

Mi esposa exclamó, ¡ Cuidado, está descaradamente picosa!

So then , what did we say here?

Native speakers will know immediately, please wait a bit for us learners to answer.

I will vote all answers, and best answer for the best response, have a laugh and enjoy !

As always please advise of errors or typos.

As long as we are using "free style" translations let me try.

You said, "Honey, you made that gringo sauce again."

She said" You better get out the fire extinguisher, gringo!

There is this subtle difference between picante and picosa that is difficult to put in words. Picosa really is like being stung by a bee or wasp.

Not free style at all Daniela --picosa and picante are synonyms -picosa more used here in Mexico - pacofinkler, Dec 18, 2014
You are so very close to it as well Daniela - pacofinkler, Dec 18, 2014
I agree with Paco. We use picoso or enchiloso but not picante for spicy (hot). - gringojrf, Dec 18, 2014
Enchilada can also be used Gringo but be advised jejej there is yet another " albur " hiding in that. - pacofinkler, Dec 18, 2014
Gringo: Do you mean "chiloso"?. I never heard "enchiloso". Maybe "estoy enchilado" que sí es común. - Clío, Dec 18, 2014
Although, be careful with "estoy enchilado" , there is an "albur" in that phrase. Got it? - Clío, Dec 18, 2014
Yes Clío estoy enchilado could be problematic. Enchiloso is Mexican Spanish. Here is a dictionary reference. enchiloso adjective (Centroamérica) (México) [+sabor] hot - gringojrf, Dec 18, 2014
Esta salsa está muy enchilioso. Picoso is risky as well since it comes from the verb Picar. - gringojrf, Dec 18, 2014
Thanks for your responses. I live in BCS. I sometimes use picoso and always get told I should use enchiloso as picoso has offcolor meanings. But as you say it may be regional to Baja. - gringojrf, Dec 19, 2014

Its a double entendre (sp?)? So I ask you Paco, what was your wife wearing at the time.

You were referring to the sauce and she was referring to herself.

So from your point of view:

  • ¡Caramba! esta salsa está discretamente picante!
  • Wow! This sauce is a little spicy.
  • ¡ Cuidado, está descaradamente picosa!
  • Careful! It is shamelessly hot.

And from her point of view:

  • Wow! you're a little naughty.
  • Careful! I'm shamelessly hot.

Just a guess.

Good Catch Gringo! - pacofinkler, Dec 18, 2014
I checked with two major Spanish/English dictionaries to make sure of my response. Sin embargo, a los diccionarios les faltan mucho. - Daniela2041, Dec 18, 2014
Si Daniela it is true in many cases - pacofinkler, Dec 18, 2014
I think Gringo is on to something here. lol - rac1, Dec 19, 2014

You said, "Wow, This sauce is hardly spicey at all".

She said, "Pay attention, that sauce is a fire-alarm special".

No hay ninguna pertinencia con este hilo excepto en lo que ya dije sobre 'lo que la mujer dice tiene siempre razón'... et voila...

My attempt

I was interested in a bowl of crisp tortilla chips that were in the kitchen and I immediately tested the salsa.

After a moment I discreetly said:

Wow! This salsa is spicy!

My wife exclaimed, "careful, it's notoriously spicy"!

Estoy perdido...

However, often those who have slaved over a dish expect more of it than they feel it delivers & treat compliments with suspicion... !!

Is this a 'does my bum look big in this ?' kind of question ?

The default 'safe' answer is...

Lo que tu mujer dice, ella tiene razón... siempre wink
