gris ( grees )

adjective ( gray; overcast, gloomy )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

How to post a picture

Examples:

1. El color favorito de Emilia es gris porque dice que pega con casi todo.

Emilia's favorite color is gray because she says it matches with almost everything.

2. En un día gris como éste lo que provoca es tomarse una siesta.

On an overcast day like today it's tempting to take a nap.

Red as lifeblood, blue as cold ice. Black as midnight, white as small mice. Gold as bright sun, green as shepherd's pie. Brown as wet earth, grey as angry sky.

Rojo como la sangre, azul como el hielo frío. Negro como la medianoche, blanca como ratones pequeños. Oro como sol brillante, verde como el pastel. Brown como tierra mojada, gris como el cielo enfadado.

This is an admittedly poor attempt at poetry, matched in failure only by my complete butchering of the Spanish translation. Corrections are appreciated!

All was well till you got to the Shephard's Pie part which is certainly not "green" lol - Jameyson72, Dec 16, 2014
The Shepherds pie does not sound appetizing but I applaud your newfound poetic vein. - annierats, Dec 16, 2014
I'm laughing so hard at your comments right now! That part of the verse stems from a variation of Shepherd's Pie that I enjoy. It's dyed green to symbolize the fields that shepherd's work on. Should have clarified that! - 00ffada9, Dec 16, 2014

Muchos pintores utilizaban diferentes tonos de gris en sus obras. Pero quizás, sólo hay dos maestros, El Greco y Rembrandt que pudieron mostrar “la belleza del gris”.

Many artists used different tones of gray in their works. But perhaps , there are only two masters: El Greco and Rembrandt, who were able to display "the beauty" of grey .

Rembrandt introdujo en el arte ”un gris fresco”, un tono medio entre sombra y luz. El estrenó también una nueva tecnica de un gris óptico. Es una de las razones por que sus imágenes se ven tan vívidas y realistas.

Rembrandt introduced in art a cool gray, the mid-tone between shadow and light. Also he was the first who used an “optical gray” technique. It is one of the reasons why his images look so vivid and realistic .

Para El Grego, el “gris” no era sólo un color, sino un concepto. Lo empleó magistralmente para expresar el misterio, el luto y la humildad en sus pinturas religiosas.

For El Greco, “gray” was not only colour but a concept. He employed it masterly to express mystery, mourning and humility in his religious paintings. enter image description here

El Halcón Gris es un pajaro australiano muy raro. Vive en las regiones desiertas lejanas y hay muchos observadores de aves que nunca han visto a uno.

The Grey Falcon is a very rare Australian bird. It lives in the remote desert areas and there are many birdwatchers who have never seen one.

Mi esposa ha leído la serie de "Cincuenta sombras de Grey", y quiere ver la película cuando se estrene, pero yo no quiero ni leer los libros ni ver la película, lo que ha hecho un dilema que no tan simple, sino un poco gris para mí- debería acompañarla a la película y sufrir, o no y enojarla.

My wife has read the "Fifty Shades of Grey" series, and wants to watch the movie when it premieres, but I don't want to read the books nor watch the movie, which has created a dilemma that is not black and white, but instead a little gray for me- should I go with her to the movie and suffer, or not and anger her.

Maybe she can go with her friends?? - sanlee, Dec 15, 2014
I suppose I will have to decide based on her mood when the time comes. Maybe if I take her somewhere very nice for valentines, I can wiggle out of it. I think the movie comes out about then. - bosquederoble, Dec 15, 2014
Just give her a tight hug amigo, I am sure she will melt (if there is enough warmth in your hug),, haha - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 16, 2014
and sometimes there is no harm in suffering a little to see our loved ones happy, so my advice is that you should go for the sake of your love, carry an eye pod and close your eyes and enjoy your favorite songs while she enjoys her favorite movie ,, hehe - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 16, 2014
There is always a way :) - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 16, 2014
You wil have to go, given the subject matter you should keep informed. - annierats, Dec 16, 2014

Annie does not like the grey English weather but it is not like that all the time.

The word "gris" is the Swedish word for "pig".

Annie no le gusta el gris clima Inglés, pero no es así todo el tiempo.

La palabra "gris" es la palabra sueca para "cerdo".

PS gris = "gray" in the USA and "grey" in Brit English.

Siempre he oído que los lobos disfrutan de aullar a la luna llena, pero nunca he oído o he visto que "gris" puede ser utilizado para un día gris.

I have always heard that wolves enjoy howling at the full moon, but I have never heard or seen that "gris" can be used for an overcast day.

En los communidades Cajun y Creole en Louisiana, hay "traiteurs," o curados, que pueden poner sobre usted un maledición. El maledición se llama un "gris-gris," pronunciado "gri-gri."

In the Cajun and Creole communities of Louisiana, there are "traiteurs," or healers, who can put a curse on you. The curse is called a "gris-gris," pronounced "gree-gree."
