madurar ( mah-doo-rahr' )

verb ( to mature; to ripen )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Cuando ella era joven cometió muchos errores, pero ha madurado bastante.

When she was young she made a lot of mistakes, but she has matured a lot.

2. Me encantan las frambuesas, pero maduran demasiado rápido.

I love raspberries, but they ripen too quickly.

Los machos maduran más tarde que las mujeres,

a veces ,diez años después , ya veces no sucede en absoluto.

¿A quién ? Es más divertido ser todo el tiempo.

Males mature later than women , sometimes ten years later,

sometimes it does not happen at all.

But who cares? It's more fun being young all the time

What is "ya veces" ?? (never heard of such a thing, hehe) .. should be "hay veces" (in my humble opinion) ,, but let our Danzilella come .. she can suggest the right thing.. :) - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 11, 2014
I may say it as " hay veces que no pase en absoluto .. or hay veces cuando no pase en absoluto (but what do I know, let's wait for Dani) - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 11, 2014
Good depiction, Ray! - rac1, Dec 11, 2014

Estamos pensando en negociar un acuerdo comercial con tu jefe. It is the correct translation :) - luisssito, Dec 12, 2014
I'm sorry to disagree with you, but according to “El Diccionario de la lengua española (DRAE) “ one of the definitons of ”madurar” is “ Poner en su debido punto con la meditación una idea, un proyecto, un designio, etc.” - yulia13, Dec 12, 2014
Moreover, Collins Spanish English dictionary explains that phrase “madurar [+ idea, plan]” means to think out; The dictionary also provides the list of synonyms for “madurar”, and one of them is ”pensar”. - yulia13, Dec 12, 2014
So, the usage of madurar instead of pensar is accepted.... I would not be so sure about it though, but my husband who is Chilean has no problems with that sentence. - yulia13, Dec 12, 2014
I want to thank your for the comment it gives us a chance to discuss something interesting :) . - yulia13, Dec 12, 2014

Se cree que las muchachas maduran más rápidamente que los muchachos. ¿Me pregunto por qué?

It is believed that girls mature more quickly than boys. I wonder why?

Well, the scientific answer to your question is that biologically they have more of estrogens than testistirones (the female hormone) which gives them the female qualities and traits and which also tweaks their growth clock ahead of men so they could - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 11, 2014
sustain pregnancy at a relatively early age and it switches off their menstrual cycles at around 45 to 50 so a woman could not conceive beyond a healthy breeding age ... it is not as simple as it sounds though as there are a lot of other hormones and oth - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 11, 2014
other biological factors involved aswell .. men on the other hand need to grow muscular and bigger so testistiriones along with other biological factors keeps the growth rate slow and study so body gets ample time to develop the extra muscle tissues, - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 11, 2014

"Breeding age" Jimmy?? Really? - rac1, Dec 11, 2014
Yes Ambi, after a certain age it is risky to bear a child and the mommy could be liable to fatalities .. - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 12, 2014
but it seems you have an issue with the terminology I used : "breeding age" is that so ?? is it not used for humans ?? (i am not sure) ,, min - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 12, 2014
in that case may be I will use "maternal age or reproductive age" how does that sound ?? - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 12, 2014

No quiero madurar aún , quiero enjovenecer porque los adultus me parecen muy aburridos, solo piensan en dinero y trabajo.

I don't want to become mature yet, I want to get younger because grownups seem so boring , they just think about money and work.

Los plátanos son amarillos, bueno, por lo menos cuando se han madurado, pero antes de esto están verdes, y después de esto están negros- y hay los que creen que se usa el verbo “ser” sólo por condiciones permanentes.

Bananas are yellow, okay, at least when they have ripened, but before that they are green, and after that they are black- and there are those that think that the verb “ser” is only used for permanent conditions.

Yes, in my experience, bananas spend the least amount of time in that middle yellow state, that is how we define them. - bosquederoble, Dec 11, 2014
And don't forget "estar roto" for all those cars rusting away in junkyards. - bosquederoble, Dec 11, 2014
When they start getting black, I make banana nut bread. :) - rac1, Dec 11, 2014
It's pretty amazing that they have been cultivated to ripen that way :-)! - Jraider, Dec 11, 2014
Normally my wife freezes them when they go overripe, for me to use when I make crockpot Kalua pork, since I don't have access to banana leaves. - bosquederoble, Dec 11, 2014

But if he is only 6, why are you worried about him, he is young, in the prime of life! Wolfie is 8 now, and of a breed that is fairly shortlived. Labradors average 12-14, I think. - annierats, Dec 11, 2014
I will vote, if you think about the subjunctive before Danizella comes along! - annierats, Dec 11, 2014
Yes Annie, you are right, subjunctive is needed here ,, not my fault, God made me like that (a tonto).. - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 11, 2014
There you are! I don't think you need the 'que'. - annierats, Dec 11, 2014
and the reason I am always worried about him is because he has Chronic kidney disease , so he may not live very long... besides the average age of labs here is around 8 to 10 years .. - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 11, 2014

Male hippos mature at about one and a half tons.
