sombra ( sohm'-brah )

noun ( shadow; shade )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Ese tipo es tan cobarde que su propia sombra lo espanta.

That guy is such a coward that his own shadow frightens him.

2. Siempre intento estacionarme en la sombra para que no se caliente el carro.

I always try to park in the shade so that the car doesn't heat up.

A veces los niños se distraen lo mejor por los juegos más simples, por ejemplo, por los juegos de sombras.

Sometimes children are distracted the best by the simplest plays, for example by the shadow games.

En la plaza de toros los asientos de público en la sombra cuestan más que los asientos en pleno sol.

At the bullring the seating for spectators in the shaded area are more expensive than seats in the blazing sun.

Claro que sí, mi querida vikinga, pues el sol es muy fuerte y quema muy fuerte así es que estar en "pleno" sol puede ser muy dañoso - 005faa61, Dec 7, 2014
Too bad it can't all be shaded. - rac1, Dec 7, 2014

Gracias, Julian. Well, Joydeep, it's not a sport for me, on the other hand, the entire breed of cattle depends on it.. And they have superbly good lives until the day comes.. - annierats, Dec 8, 2014

Una canción más querida en ambos México y España, interpretada primeramente por Javier Solis en los años 60 y años después por Rocio Dúrcal se llama "Sombras".

A song well loved in both Mexico and Spain, sung first by Javier Solis in the 60s and years later by Roco Dúrcal is called "Shadows".

Sombras - Rocio Dúrcal

Sombras nada mas! I sing this one - - pacofinkler, Dec 7, 2014
Joydeep, obviously "interpretar" doesn´t mean "sing" but it´s a very common usage among the arts meaning "to perform", so now we can say: "Pacofinkler la interpreta también" - 005faa61, Dec 8, 2014
Voy a escucharlo ahora. - languagenut, Dec 8, 2014
A mí también - sanlee, Dec 8, 2014

No quieres estar en la sombra de La Sombra.

You don't want to be in the shadow of The Shadow.

Nope. Lol - rac1, Dec 7, 2014
Debajo de must be used together but Bajo is a preposition and can be used alone - pacofinkler, Dec 7, 2014
So considering regular speech, I would use simply "bajo los ojos in this case - pacofinkler, Dec 7, 2014

Al entrar a las sombras del bosque nuboso tiene tuvo un poco de miedo, debido a los tigres, leones y osos (jaguares, pumas y osos de anteojos) que podría encontrar, pero el antropólogo siguió adelante, porque sabía que su trabajo era muy importante, y que debía documentar la cultura de los indígenas antes de que fuera contaminada por contacto extranjero.

Upon entering the shadows of the cloud forest he had a bit of fear, due to the tigers, lions and bears (jaguars, pumas and spectacled bears) that he might find, but the anthropologist pressed on, because he knew that his work was very important, and that he must document the culture of the indigenous people before it was contaminated by outside contact.

Disclaimer: In Spanish, in some areas pumas may be referred to as leons and jaguars as tigres, and the ranges of both overlap the spectacled bear in the cloud forests of the Northern Andes (and that is as close as you can come to having lions and tigers and bears in the modern world), but I have no idea if there were still people with limited contact with Western culture in that range by the time anthropologists were running around studying people.

True friends are like the shadow of a tree, that does not distiguish between races, religion or ideologies.

Algunos psicólogos dicen de La Sombra, que se la parte de la psique en que almacenamos todos las cosas en que no queremos pensar o admitir a nosotros mismos.

Some psychologists speak about The Shadow, which is a part of the psyche in which we keep all the things which we don't want to think about or admit to ourselves.
