derribar ( deh-rree-bahr' )

verb ( to knock down; to demolish )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Although he was smaller, Ralphie knocked Scut down with a punch.

2. La ciudad va a derribar esta cuadra entera para construir condominios nuevos.

The city is going to demolish this entire block to build new condominiums.

When I look at this picture, I'm torn between two thoughts: (1) this is a treasure that adds character to the property and (2) this is an eyesore that definitely needs to go! - tuamiga1973, Dec 5, 2014
It has possibilities.....just not sure what they are. - rac1, Dec 6, 2014
Hmmm, I am sure that would be condemned around here. - sanlee, Dec 6, 2014
I am always intrigued by old buildings like this. There is some history behind them. - Findy, Dec 8, 2014
It may be an eyesore on the property, but it makes a great photograph. - AnnRon, Dec 8, 2014

Una muchacha adolescente, que conozco, estaba conduciendo. Un gato vino corriendo delante de su coche. La muchacha viró bruscamente y salvó el gato pero derribó un buzón de correo.

A teenaged girl I know was driving. A cat came running in front of her car. The girl swerved and saved the cat but knocked down a mail box.

¡Ay! ¡Pobre Jimmy! Si me entero de quién sería ¡me la derribo yo!

Ay! Poor Jimmy, If I find out who could it be, I'll flatten her for you myself!

Nadie se mete con Jimmy sin haberselas conmigo.

Nobody gets into it with Jimmy without dealing with me about it!

You have to see Joydeep Singh's post for this to make any sense.

habérselas? - sanlee, Dec 6, 2014
Hi, Sandy, I'm using highly colloquial language here. My use of the reflexive is not in the books, but it is common. Habérselas con alguien, is in the dictionary, and it means "to have it out" with someone, or as I used it "to deal with" agressively. - Daniela2041, Dec 6, 2014
There is a lot of reflexive usage that differs a little from place to place and it is "Greek" to most English speakers. :) - Daniela2041, Dec 6, 2014
Thanks for the explanation, Danil. I understand it now. - sanlee, Dec 6, 2014
And I agree with you and Ambi. No one does that to our Jimmy! - sanlee, Dec 6, 2014
Awwww ... love you amiga ... it means a lot :) .. also, thanks Ambi and Sandy. - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 6, 2014
Dani, if I may ask you, why have you used the reflexive with derribar ?? - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 6, 2014
It's a long story--it's just a very colloquial way of expressing emotion. - Daniela2041, Dec 6, 2014
Okie, thank you Danni :) - Joydeep_Singh, Dec 6, 2014

Derribar un rascacielos rodeado de otros edificios sin dañarlos no es tan fácil, y exige conocimiento de la técnica correcta.

To bring down a skyscraper surrounded by other buildings without damaging them is not that easy, and requires knowlege of the correct technique.

When a casino is demolished in Las Vegas, they put the neon signs into The Neon Museum (affectionately named The Boneyard by locals).

Cuando un casino es derriba en Las Vegas, ellos ponen los signos de neón en El Muséo de Neón (afectuosamente llama Yarda del Hueso por las gentes locales).

(That's my husband, youngest munchkin y yo. lol)
