Regular and irregular Spanish gerunds

Regular gerunds (present participles)
Most present participles are regular. The patterns for regular gerunds are the following:
-ar verbs: simply drop the infinitive ending and replace it by -ando. -er verbs: drop the infinitive ending and replace it by -iendo. -ir verbs: drop the infinitive ending and replace it by -iendo.
hablar -- hablando Estamos hablando con la maestra. We are speaking to the teacher.
comer -- comiendo María está comiendo paella. María is eating paella.
vivir -- viviendo
Estoy viviendo con Pedro ahora porque no puedo pagar una casa. Now, I´m living with Pedro because I can´t pay a house.
Irregular gerunds (present participles)
Stem changing –ir verbs: For stem changing –ir verbs the patterns are the following:
O:UE verbs --- O:U + IENDO Examples: Dormir: durmiendo. Morir: muriendo ¿Puedo ver al bebé? No, está durmiendo. Can I see baby?No, he´s sleeping.
E:IE verbs --- E:I + IENDO Examples: Sentir: sintiendo Hervir: hirviendo El agua está hirviendo. Water is boiling.
E:I verbs --- E:I + IENDO Examples: Decir: diciendo Servir: sirviendo La azafata nos está diciendo que tenemos que sentarnos. Flight attendant is telling us we have to sit down.
-er and –ir verbs whose stem ends in a vowel: drop the infinitive ending and replace it by +YENDO
Examples:
Ir: yendo Oír: oyendo Destruir: destruyendo Huir: huyendo Traer: trayendo Caer: cayendo
La contaminación está destruyendo nuestro planeta. Pollution is destroying our planet. Ana está huyendo con Luis. Ana is running away with Luis. ¿Me estás oyendo? Are you hearing me?
