Handsome is as handsome does.

In this expression the word "handsome" has nothing to do with being good looking.

Look here for synonyms.

It means more like "Actions speak louder than words."

I found many interpretations of this proverb, and quite frankly, it's hard to align them: some even state the exact opposite from others..

So let's first make clear what exactly you mean:

  • Good-looking people tend to be arrogant and unpleasant because they are used to having it easy
  • Don't judge a book by it's cover: people may look one way but come out to be entirely different once you get to know them
  • Birds of a feather flock together: People tend to look for themselves in others, and when they find it and like what they see, they'll also like that other person
  • Beauty is on the inside: Someone who acts like a good person is someone I'll consider a beautiful person
  • other..?
