Scared to talk to native Spanish speakers!!
Hola ,my name is Lynasha. I been learning Spanish for 5 months now and I meet a girl that speak spanish to. Well the thing about it she hates other people talking her language. Specially when I ask her a question in Spanish. You can tell she get really irritated when I speak Spanish. She told me "to stop acting like something that I'm not". Her comment really effected me from trying to talk to other native Spanish speakers. Would all Spanish native speakers react like this when I try to speak Spanish to them???

Lynasha, I do NOT think all native Spanish speakers would react like that. I've found just the opposite - most appreciate that you're trying to speak their language.
It sounds like this girl has other issues. If you want, try to tell her, nicely and in English, that you are trying to learn Spanish, and it would help if, sometimes, you two could speak Spanish together. If she says she does not want to, leave it at that and look for other Spanish speakers to practice with. Good luck and stick with it!!

No, not all natives react this way. I suggest you find someone else to practice with and forget about this rude girl.

Yes, we can see that her negative attitude has knocked your confidence quite a lot but many of us can assure you that not all Hispanic people act in this way! To be honest, most of the Spanish natives I have ever had the pleasure of speaking to / meeting have been /are very friendly and understanding people and many are very patient with the mistakes we non-natives make! I would encourage you to 'take on board' what Julian Chivi has said and try to put this experience behind you (ie forget it) ! ![]()
On sites like this, natives of both languges: Spanish and English, are particularly disposed (willing) to help people to learn their mother tongue(native language) because this is an educational website and so that's what we are here for: to help each other! ![]()
In the big wide world we will encounter some peope wh do not wish to help us whatever our problem or request may be, no matter who respectfully we ask them, and sadly we just have to accept that, move on and not allow their attitude to get us down. Yes, most of us have been there at some time in our life! We,,for our part, need to learn wisdom, discernment, and sensitivity. Wisdom to accept that not everyone will be willing to help us, discerment to 'know' /recognize the right people to ask (which comes with a lot of experience) and sensitivity in the way in which we approach peeople! We shouldn't automatically assume that everyone will be pleased that we are learning their native language, or that, even if they are pleased for us, that they will necessarily have the time to help us by listening to our mistakes and correcting them! We should gentky explan to people that we are learnng their natve language and ask them if they would be willng to help us by speaking with us and correcting our mistakes.
However, we need quality people to help us not particularly a large quantity of them! If we can just find two or three people who would be willing to help us, to begin with, (as beginners) that is really all we need! Once we can start to hold a basic conversation in Spanish our confidence will grow!
I would encourage you to ask for someone (a native) with whom you can practice your Spanish and you could perhaps help them with their English.
I hope this helps ![]()
To love-always , I have recently returned from a month travelling in Spain ,
my Spanish is woeful ,but I have never encountered a single person that
was rude or unhelpful , this ( hopefully ) ex friend has problems , do not
take any notice of her , forge ahead and conquer all young lady .Go girl go !
Exactamente, búscate un compañero que esté interesado en un intercambio. Una hora de español y una de inglés.
Intenta buscar uno en duolingo.com
Existen paginas para eso.
No, Spanish people are so kind .
It would be well if you would find someone who is struggling with her English as I did many years ago. That way you could really help each other. I needed and appreciated all the help I could get. I don't even have a trace of a Spanish accent anymore. You can do this, girl!
Here is a link to a previous post that could help you.
Italki is another place to find speaking partners Italki
That person is so rude! My opinion is that most would not react this way. Could it be that she is trying to hide her heritage for whatever reason? Could it be that she doesn't speak English well, and wants to totally immerse herself in English so that she can learn more?
I am guilty of that but not to the point of rudeness. And it was vice versa. I had a lot of book-learning" when I went to Mexico in the early 70's and wanted to avoid all English speakers. That wan't so easy in the Zona Rosa of downtown Mexico City where I spent my free time in Juarez Park across from the big tourist hotels.
That person is just plain rude. Maybe try the tact of "I'll teach you this if you teach me that".
Ah, and that opens up a whole new Pandora's box. It was the beer-garden of the Cuatémoc Brewery in Monterrey, NL. I met a old friend there from the Middle West who had traveled to find out what I was doing in Mexico. My friends from Mexico City and I, and my friend from the Middle West started to swap "dirty words" in the two languages. We were kind of loud and got kicked out of the beer-garden. ![]()
I will always remember that.
No, not all natives react he same way as her.
Excuse my French, but.. ¡Qué perra es ella!
I'll teach you a word for a person like that: es una maleducada! She doesn't sound like the kind of person you'd want to talk to.. in ANY language!
Don't worry, I've met many natives and I've never had a reaction like that! You were just very unlucky to find the one exception first. I suggest looking for other natives or more advanced students to chat with
Most natives will be delighted you're making an effort to learn their language.
However, don't assume any native wants to interrupt the conversation after every 2 words to explain, translate etc, it can get tedious if it happens tóó much, and not everyone's a teacher ![]()
Btw, some notes on your English: *I've(have) been, *met(past), *speaks(3d person), *Spanish(how dare you
) *too, *it is that *, especially, *affected(or in this context: held me back or so)
eeps! This rude girl is not worth your time. Sometimes it is just because someone is insecure about themselves that they act this way. Perhaps she'll grow out of it one day, but please don't let this one person ruin your enjoyment of expanding your horizons by learning a new language! Keep trying and practicing - and feel free to practice with us fellow learners here at SD.
I have found that most Spanish speakers are kind and patient when I stumble over my words and attempt to speak their language. They are happy to help me along with pronunciation and grammar, and will humor me when I practice on them (even though they can speak English).
