Past Participle - preterite or imperfect

How would you use the past participle with preterite tense? For example, would "It was painted" be written as "estuvo pintado" or "estaba pintado"? (Assume the subject is masculine)

Thanks in advance

I agree with Annie´s answer, but if you are focusing on the action of being painted rather than the quality of the painted thing, then we would say: ..... fue pintado .... and verb would be preterite because the action was completed.

Thank you, I didn't think of it in this manner, but , of course , you're right. - annierats, Nov 29, 2014

To be of a certain colour is usally a description. If it is a description in the past, themost normal way would be ' estaba pintado de color rojo' . Imperfect.

But in real life the sentence would probably go something like: soñaba con una casa, pintada de azúl.. ( I used to dream of a house that was painted blue.)
