A spinnaker is a large colorful sail used for sailing downwind (with the wind behind the boat).

A spinnaker is the big colorful sail at the front of a sailboat. (I'm trying not to be too technical here.) That's the sail you usually see in all those wonderful sailing brochures, etc. Spinnaker flying is really fun. The boat is at anchor, and the spinnaker is attached only at the top of the mast. Between the bottom corners is tied a seat. So you sit there, and as the wind blows, the spinnaker sail lifts you up, then the wind spills, and you fall into the ocean (still sitting), then the wind fills the sail and up you go again, then down into the sea again, on and on. It is really a blast!
