invierno ( een-byehr'-noh )

noun ( winter )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. En el hemisferio sur, el solsticio de invierno ocurre siempre el veintiuno o el veintidós de junio.

In the southern hemisphere, the winter solstice always occurs June 21 or 22.

2. El invierno pasado fue tan fuerte que se me congelaron los dedos del pie.

Last winter was so severe that I got frostbite on my toes.

Aunque no es invierno oficialmente hasta dentro de más o menos un mes, ya ha nevado aquí y también además hace mucho frío.

Even though it is not officially winter until more or less one month, it has already snowed here and also it is very cold.

Evidencia bíblica muestra que Cristo no nació en el invierno. Los pastores estaban en el campo viendo su rebaño por la noche. Sus padres vinieron a Belén para registrase en un censo romano. Esto no habría sido posible durante el invierno.

Biblical evidence shows that Christ was not born in winter. Shepherds were in the field watching their flock at night. His parents came to Bethlehem to register in a Roman census. This would not have been possible during winter.

I got in on this late, but Here goes!

Sandy: ¡Oye, chica! ¿Dónde vas a pasar el invierno?

Dani: Preferiría invernar an Miami.

Jimmy; ¡Ay,tú! ¡Siempre con las bromas!

English follows.

Sandy: Hey, girl, where are you going to spend the winter?

Dani: I would rather spend the winter in Miami.

Jimmy" Oh, you! Always with the jokes.

(The joke here is that "invernar" also means "to hibernate.")

El primer día del invierno este año es el 21 diciembre (en el hemisferio del norte), pero ya hace frío acá donde estoy aunque no hay nieve.

The first day of winter this year is December 21st (in the northern hemisphere), but it's already cold here where I am although there's no snow.

Aquí estoy, muy cerca de Africa, y por eso no he tenido los problemas regulares del frío este año.Pero en poco tiempo tengo que volver a Inglaterra y su clima horroroso.

As I'm currently tsaying close to Africa I haven't had the normal problems with the cold this year, but quite soon I have to return to England and it's awful climate.

Jubilado, please feel free to play or do skiing! Your choice! Isn't that nice? - Raja-jani, Nov 24, 2014

Nos acerca el invierno, y por eso los días se acorta y ya manejo al trabajo y regreso a casa en la oscuridad, pero cuando el invierno empiece de verdad, después del solsticio, sé que los días se comenzará a alargar, aunque se queden fríos.

Winter is coming, and thus the days are shortening and I am already driving to work and returning home in the darkness, but when the winter truly begins, after the solstice, I know that the days will start to lengthen, even if they stay cold.

Aqui, en Puerto Rico, no hay invierno, sino sequia. Pero con un poco de frio como acompañante.

Here in Puerto Rico there is no winter, there is only the dry season, but with little cold temperatures to go with it.
