premio ( preh-myoh' )

noun ( award, prize )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Every year, Nobel Prizes are awarded in six different categories.

2. A mi sobrina le dieron un premio por su proyecto de arte.

My niece received an award for her art project.

Cuando no has ganado el premio siempre se dice que no hay mal que por bien no venga, pero la verdad es que sigo esperando el bien...

When you've failed to win the prize they always say that every cloud has it's silver lining, but, truthfully,I'm still looking for that silver lining..

Me gustaría una entrevista con el ganador del premio Nobel de la Paz, pero no creo que es probable que esto suceda.

I would like an interview with the Nobel peace prize winner, but I don't think it is likely to happen.

No puedo apreciar mucho el premio Nobel de la literatura, porque en su tiempo Tolstoi no lo recibía.

I cannot appreciate very much the Nobel Prize for the literature, because in his time Tolstoy was not receiving it.

Suggestion: "I don't like the fact that the Nobel Prize winner for literature, Tolstoy, didn't receive it in his lifetime. - rac1, Nov 21, 2014
That is sad the way they handled it. - rac1, Nov 21, 2014
I think this is better porcu - "I can't appreciate the Nobel Prize for literature because there was no such prize during the life time of Tolstoy." - ian-hill, Nov 21, 2014
Thanks Ian. :) - rac1, Nov 21, 2014
Hola, amiga. ". . . did not receive it." - AnnRon, Nov 21, 2014
Something odd is happening with comments. At one point yesterday the comment before mine disappeared when I posted mine. Just now, none of the comments above mine were visible until I posted mine. Sorry for the redundant correction. - AnnRon, Nov 21, 2014
Some of mine have disappeared as well. - Jraider, Nov 21, 2014
Mine too, probably they were offensive.. - annierats, Nov 21, 2014
The Nobel prize already existed in Tolstoy's lifetime, but somebody else, very insignificant got it - porcupine7, Nov 21, 2014
oops I missed the point completely :))) - ian-hill, Nov 21, 2014
No problems...:) The comments are a little wacky today. - rac1, Nov 21, 2014
Then your sentence should read as follows: I don't appreciate the fact that Tolstoy didn't receive the Nobel Prize for literature. Something along those lines. Right now, your sentence doesn't make sense. :) - rac1, Nov 21, 2014
My point here in How to say it in English. :) - rac1, Nov 21, 2014
No, I do not appreciate the Prize itself, because Tolstoy didn't receive it, because according ot my opinion he is one of the greatest writers of our age. - porcupine7, Nov 22, 2014

El premio por buen comunicación es comprensión. Lo por una competición a menudo es dinero pero dicen que la virtud es su propia recompensa. Me queda conforme vivir así.

The award for good communication is understanding. For a competition often it is money, but they say that virtue is its own reward. I am content to live this way.

Cuando era niño habia recibido un premio de sinceridad en mi escuela por haber informado la administación de escuela de una joya perdida que había encontrado caido en el suelo.

When I was a kid I had been awarded with an honesty prize in my school for returning a peace of jewelry I found fallen on the floor.

A mí me gustaría ganar El Premio Gordo en la lotería. Así podría cambiar mi nombre de usuario a "Jubilada."

I would like to win the First Prize in the Loterry. Thus, I could change my user name to "Jubilada." (Retired) ---

At this point, I'm just tired.

Una vez (hace muchos años) mi esposa me otorgó el premio de mejor esposo del mundo- me pregunto si debería llevar la cinta esta noche y averiguar lo que sucede - no estoy seguro de que ella siga creyendo que yo lo merezco.

Once (many years ago) my wife awarded me the prize of best husband in the world- I wonder if I should wear the ribbon tonight and find out what happens - I am not sure that she still thinks that I deserve it.
