could "representante" be translated as "figure"?

Although Spandict does not give "figure" as a definition of "representante," I would think that's one possible translation, as in this sentence:
José de San Martín fue uno de los grandes representantes de la historia Argentina.
To say that José de San Martín is one of the great "representatives" of the history of Argentina is awkward. Thoughts?

No, But figurar could also mean representar/aparentar
