Practice: Spanish Acronyms (For Spanish Learners)
Rules: Write out some well-known Spanish acronyms or make up some of your own.
Obviously, you need to write your acronyms in Spanish, but next to the Spanish word, you can put the English equivalent word, but you don't have to.
Please don't use any offensive words, or acronyms, and please absolutely NO pictures.
Keep it fun for everyone, and if someone, or more than one person wants to correct the Spanish, that would be wonderful! ![]()
Have fun!

SIDA= El síndrome de inmunodeficiencia adquirida
VIH= El virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana
Hoy en día, con atención médica buena, los que padecen del VIH pueden impedir el desarrollo de SIDA durante un tiempo largo, pero, por desgracia, en muchas partes del mundo los que sufren del VIH no pueden acceder a atención médica adecuada.

S E P = Secretaría de Educación Publica
Something typical I've noticed people fluent in Spanish do, is abbreviate dates using the number of the day of the month, a dash, and the first letter of the month.
Example 1: Right after the attacks of 11-M (11th of March, 2004) the PP (Partido Popular) government (who, against the people's will, had decided to side with Bush and send resources to the war on Iraq) pointed a blaming finger towards ETA (Euskadi Ta Askatasuna - the terroris Basque Country seperatist movement) When it was discovered they had been framed to keep possibly-Al-Quaida-related terrorists out of the picture because of the upcoming elections, the PP's biggest rival, the PSOE (Partido Socialista Obrero Español) won.
Example 2: Las tareas para el 21-N: - haz una presentación de 5 minutos sobre tus primeros resultados de la investigación del corpus - lee pg. 159-192 y contesta las preguntas por abajo.
Some that could be handy when writing a formal letter or e-mail:
Ud. = usted
Uds. = ustedes
Sr. = señor
Sra. = señora
Dr. = doctor
Dra. = doctora
and some that I use when I take notes (in class):
ej. = ejemplo
p.e. = por ejemplo
etc. = etcétera
s. = siglo
a.C. = antes de Cristo
d.C. = después de Cristo
a.m. (ante merídiem) = antes del mediodía
p.m. (post merídiem) = después del mediodía
c/u = cada una
pg. = página
vol. = volumen
núm / nro. = número
tel. = teléfono
I love this one:
abrev. --> abreviatura o abreviado X)
ONG(s) - Organización(es) No Gubernamental(es)
Here is one that I wondered about for years.
I N S E N
Don't ask me why the letters don't match the name becuase I have no idea.
O N U La Organización de las Naciones Unidas - United Nations.
OVNI- objeto volador no identificado
Yo no creo que los extraterrestres nos hayan visitado, pero mi esposa, sí, lo creo.
In Spanish transportation there are 2 acronims that every single last person knows:
el AVE: Alta Velocidad Española (trenes para las distancias largas)
el Renfe: Red Nacional de Ferrocarriles Españoles
Something very curious I found is that sometimes, to indicate an abbreviation is plural, instead of adding an s to the end, the letters are simply duplicated! For example: EEUU = Estados Unidos
