plata ( plah'-tah )

noun ( silver; money )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. México es el país que más plata produce en el mundo—casi ciento setenta millones de onzas al año.

Mexico is the country that produces the most silver in the world—almost 170 million ounces a year.

2. Me gustaría viajar más de lo que lo hago, pero no tengo plata.

I'd like to travel more than I do, but I don't have money.

Hace muchos años compré unas pocas cosas para el comedor que eran hechas de plata, pero las cosas siempre se deslustraban, y después de años de pulirlas, mi esposa se hartó de esto, y las donó a una caridad.

Many years ago I bought a few things for the dining room that were made of silver, but they would always become tarnished, and after years of polishing them, my wife got fed up with it, and gave them to a charity.

How often did you have to clean them? - rac1, Nov 18, 2014
There is a difference between how often we needed to, and how often we actually did. That was a good part of the issue. ;) - bosquederoble, Nov 18, 2014
I think in the old days people that could afford silver usually had servants to clean it :-)! - Jraider, Nov 18, 2014
I think so too. I think my wife would like it if I could provide her with servants, but such is not to be. ;) - bosquederoble, Nov 18, 2014
She does enjoy watching Downton Abbey though. :) - bosquederoble, Nov 18, 2014
Hey bosque, now I know what to get my wife for Christmas ;-)!!!! - Jraider, Nov 18, 2014
Silver, servants, or Downton Abbey DVDs? - bosquederoble, Nov 18, 2014

It is often said that money cannot buy happiness. That is a lie. When was the last time you saw a sad billionaire?

A menudo se dice que el dinero no puede comprar la felicidad. Esto es una mentira. ¿Cuando era la vez pasada que vio a un millonario triste?

Creo que esto hebilla del cinturón debería leer, "Solía tener un poco dinero de la plata, pero ahora que he comprado un caballo, no tengo dinero para alimentarlo".

I believe this belt buckle should read, "I used to have some silver money, but now that I bought a horse, I don't have any money to feed it".

Should it be subjunctive after 'hasta que'? I have to go out now and can't think about this any longer, besides I avoid thinking about the 2 days of driving ahead. - annierats, Nov 18, 2014
http://users.ipfw.edu/jehle/courses/SUBJADV.HTM; hasta que is followed by subjunctive when referring to the future to the best of my understanding. :) - bosquederoble, Nov 18, 2014

De la plata puede hacer no solo monedas si no jarras , vasos y otros platos y cubiertos. Ellos son muy elegantes, pero no es fácil de limpiarlos.

From silver can be done not only coins but jugs, cups and other dishes and cutlery. They are very elegant, but it is not easy to clean them.

Vivo de Nevada, cuál es que se llama "El Estado de la Plata" porque de El por causa al Fílon de Comstock, que fue descubierto en 1859.

I live in Nevada, which is called "The Silver State" because of The Comstock Lode, discovered in 1859.

I would say, "which was struck" in 1859 - as in "they struck silver," but I wasn't sure how that would translate. There are so many different ways to use "strike" as in

  • to strike (find) gold or oil
  • to strike (light) a match
  • to strike a person (to hit them)
  • to strike (make) a coin
  • to strike someone funny (to make them laugh)
  • to strike out (to begin a journey)
  • to strike the sails (to haul down the mast of a ship)
  • to strike (at work, to cease working so the employer will meet demands)
  • to strike (shake) hands or to strike a deal
  • Oh, and probably a bunch more...

Creo que les gustan diamantes mas que oro y plata a las mujeres y si tendrán una combanicaión de todos los tres entonces nada hay igual.

I think that women like diamonds more than gold and silver, but if they get a combination of all three together then nothing like it smile
