mirada ( mee-rah'-dah )

noun ( glance, look )

We are currently looking for a corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a pm. In the meantime, please help each other as you are able.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1. Con sólo una mirada, mi novia y yo acordamos irnos de la fiesta.

With just a look, my girlfriend and I agreed to leave the party.

2. ¿Qué te pasa? Tienes la mirada triste.

What's wrong? You have a sad look on your face.

La mirada existe en la superficie pero a veces sus raíces extienden hasta el alma.

A look exists on the surface but sometimes its roots extend to the soul.

Parece que una mirada intensa sea la parte mas importante para seducir a otra persona. Si no tienes este típo de mirada hay que practicar enfrente del espejo.

It seems that the most important asset for seducing somebody else might be an intense gaze. If you can't achieve this way of looking at others you just have to practice in front of the mirror.

how to do it

I might end up seducing myself if I practice before the mirror... - Joydeep_Singh, Nov 12, 2014
Very good advice, Annie. - rac1, Nov 12, 2014
An intense gaze can also scare the "bejesus" out of someone. - Jubilado, Nov 12, 2014
True, Jubilado, very true, especially if you don't fancy them at all and they keep looking.. - annierats, Nov 13, 2014

Este tigre tiene una mirada feroz; que bien que encontramos en el Parque Zoológico y no en otro sitio.

This tiger has a fierce look; how good that we meet him in the Zoological garden and not in another place.

Hay otras maneras de comunicarse además de las palabras, pero cada vez que intento comunicarme con mi esposa con una mirada y un ademán gesto, aunque me entiende muy bien, siempre me dice que no soy un niño pequeño y que puedo preguntarle por lo que quiero.

There are more ways of communicating than verbally, but every time that I try to communicate with my wife with a look and a gesture, even though she understands me perfectly well, she always tells me that I am not an infant, and that I can ask for what I want.

Ha, ha, ha! So much for nonverbal communication (at least in a positive way). - Jubilado, Nov 12, 2014
Correction: "...intento comunicarME con mi esposa.." "...siempre me dice que no soy UN niño pequeño y que puedo preguntarLE lo que quiera" - txustaboy, Nov 13, 2014
Suggestion: I would use "gesto" instead "ademán" in this context. - txustaboy, Nov 13, 2014

Dirty look and a girl picture????. Probably you are using "mirada sucia" in a context unknown for me.. - txustaboy, Nov 13, 2014
Ann dear, I think Tx is right .. as you know that we can't translate many things word for word .. so mirada sucia may not make as good a sense as it does in english - Joydeep_Singh, Nov 13, 2014
May be you could say "mirada de odio" or mirada mala etc. - Joydeep_Singh, Nov 13, 2014

Correction/Suggestion: Echad una mirada hacia la luna ... un gran volcán acaba de entrar en erupción. - txustaboy, Nov 13, 2014
Hi Tx.. thanks for the suggestion .. but the reason I didn't use "Gran" was that I didn't want it to mean "a great volcano" .. but a big volcano ... Hope you will agree with me now :) - Joydeep_Singh, Nov 13, 2014

Joydeep's post got me thinking. I was in England in 1972 do they still use "have a butchers" for "take a look" over there (cockney slang). - Jubilado, Nov 12, 2014
Thanks Ian. :) - rac1, Nov 12, 2014
Amigo, I think it should be " su manera de vestirse" unless we are talking about someone who dresses others :) - Joydeep_Singh, Nov 12, 2014
Yes Jubildao - it is still said - mainly near london I think. Cockney rhyming slang from "Butcher's hook" :) - ian-hill, Nov 12, 2014

and I don't think that "desde" is the right preposition for this context ... I would say " Aprendi la palabra mirada de la cancion ....... - Joydeep_Singh, Nov 12, 2014

No es bueno clavar la mirada en alguien a menos que estés interesado en acercarte.

It's not good to fix your gaze on someone unless you are interested in getting close.

A veces solamente una pequeña mirada es suficiente para darse cuenta de que una persona es especial. ¡ El amor a primera vista es posible!

Sometimes only a little glance is enough to recognise that a person is special. Love at first sight is possible!
